GENERAL SCENARIO The exercise will simulate a continuous eruption of an Azorean volcano (FURNAS 1802‐10, Azores, N37°46’ W25°19’) starting on 26th April 2012 at 0001 UTC. Exercise date and time: 26 and 27 April from 05:30UTC to 16:00 UTC The exercise will use real meteorological data gathered from ARPEGE (Meteo France Numerical Weather Prediction model) analyses on 1 and 2nd of December 2010. The exercise will simulate an eruption of FURNAS (Azores) starting at 0001 UTC on 26/04/2012 with a continuous plume height reaching 39,000 Feet (12Km). (NOTE: At eruption time ‐00:01‐ Santa Maria OACC, Volcano Observatory, VAAC Toulouse and Lisboa NOF – and only these bodies ‐ will run a separate but complementary local exercise with code name SMAVOLC 001; it will allow to exercise initial Alert Phase, to issue first VONA and to consequentially VAAC to star running Dispersal Models) By the time of the start of the exercise on 26 April the volcanic ash cloud has spread eastward from Azores, and reaches the Lisboa FIR. It continues to spread on 26th towards Maghreb and Italy. On 27th it has reached Poland and continues to spread north and eastward. During the two days, all the following FIRs are to be impacted by medium/high level concentration ash cloud: ‐ 3 ‐ Santa Maria Oceanic, Lisboa, Casablanca, Madrid, Barcelona, Alger, Tunis, Marseille, Malta, Roma, Beograd, Tirana, Sofia, Odesa, Chisinau, Athinai, Istanbul, Bucaresti, Sarajevo, Skopje, Zagreb, Budapest, Bratislava, Warszawa, Vilnius, Kaliningrad, Samara, Penza, Minsk, L’viv, Kyiv, Riga, Tallin, Simferopol, Kharkov, Moscow, Tampere. Samples of VAG, VAA, csv files, concentration charts and graphic scenario are given in annex. The Toulouse VAAC will generate and issue VAA/VAG and VA Concentration charts at 6 hourly intervals per the EUR/NAT VA Contingency plan. As one of the objectives of this exercise was to test the benefit of using PIREP in the production of advisories, VAG will be amended in real time during the exercise to reflect the PIREPs received at VAAC Toulouse (PIREP too inconsistent with the initial scenario will be disregarded). As the distribution by AFTN of PIREPs is not yet fully operational in each European country, it is highly recommended to double transmission (one by AFTN and the other by e‐mail at [email protected] ) 3 .
