The event is the biggest of its type in the country with children tackling a 2.1km course. In the lead-up to the event they run 40km in stages so they know what a real marathon distance is like. Sport Bay of Plenty School Sport team leader Gareth Yates said the Mini Marathon was in its fifth year and had grown from 578 runners in 2012 up to 1530 this year.
