2006 Conservation Impact Report conservation impact report Zoos and aquariums accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) are much more than places to see animals – they are leaders in conservation. In the last five years, AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums funded 3,693 conservation projects in more than 100 countries. Annual spending on conservation averages nearly $70 million per year. From endangered species breeding to field conservation to educational programs, zoos and aquariums help maintain our planet’s diverse wildlife and natural habitats while engaging the American public to appreciate and participate in conservation. In this annual report, you will find a summary of the 2006 collective conservation efforts of AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums, as well as a complete list of individual projects broken out by state and by zoological institution. 2006 annual summary Total number of projects reported 1,807 New824 Continued983 Publications AZA experts publish their findings each year to share their wealth of knowledge with their colleagues and the rest of the scientific community. Not all institutions report the amount of money spent on their projects or contributions. Thus, the total expenses reported to AZA are likely to only reflect a subset of the entire impact AZA zoos and aquariums had on conservation that year.
