Kishanganj district lies in the North eastern part of Bihar sharing its borders with Nepal and the state of West Bengal. It lies between 25020 N to 26030 N Latitude and 87070 E to 88019 E Longitude. It has a geographical area of 1,886.82 sq. km. The district accounts for -division and seven blocks namely Kishanganj, Bhahadurganj, Thakurganj, Pothia, Tedhaganch, Kochadhaman and Dighalbank. Kishanganj was sub-division of Purnea district till 1990. However, after 17 years of struggle by the people of Kishanganj, it became a district on 14th January 1990. ii. The presence of both high lands as well as low lands with good rainfall and humidity along with the fertile soil of Ganga plains makes it a very productive agricultural land. iii. Demographic Profile: a) The demographic profile of the district is given below: (Source: Bihar Economic Survey 2011) b) Kishanganj district is having largest population share of Muslims (67.58 percent) in the state followed by Katihar (42.53 percent), Araria (41.14 percent) and Purnea (36.76 percent). Kishanganj and Katihar also have the largest share of Christians in the population. The majority of the district population is living in rural areas with the rural area accounting for 90.32% of total population and urban area accounting for just 9.68% of population. c) The literacy rate by gender in Kishanganj district as per census 2011 is given below: (Source : census 2011) d) Kishanganj was having the lowest literacy rate (33.1 percent) in the 2001. But in 2011, if the decadal increase in literacy rates in 38 districts is considered, the highest increase was recorded in Kishanganj (24.40 percent). Similarly, in respect of the decadal increase in female literacy rate, Kishanganj recorded the highest increase. However, sincere efforts are still required in the field of health and education. Total number of schools in 2016-17 & colleges in 2017-18 in the district was 1319 & 7 respectively. The total enrolment during & 2016-17 in primary & upper primary schools in the district was 2.10 lakh and 1.37 lakh respectively. e) Population density of the district is 898 persons/sq. km against state average of 1106 persons/sq.km. Of the total households of 3.56 lakh, 3.05 lakh lives in rural areas. About 78% of the families are below poverty line. More than 32.92% of the households have Pucca dwelling. However, drinking water facility (within premises or nearby premises), electricity & sanitation facilities are available to 90.26%, 19.92% and 13.29% households respectively. This percentage has worsened in rural areas where electricity and sanitation is available to only 13.96% & 6.15% of the households respectively. 6 PLP 2020-21 Kishanganj iv. The per capita Gross District Domestic Product (GDDP) at 2004-05 prices and the ranking of the district in the state during 2007-08 to 2011-12 is as under : (Source: Directorate of Economics and Statistics, GoB) v. Major economy activity and livelihood options in the district : Kishanganj district is primarily an agro-based economy with a majority of the population engaged in cultivation. The economy of Kishanganj district is based on primary sector, with substantial contribution from tertiary sector. The economy of Kishanganj largely depends on agriculture where the major agricultural and horticulture produce are paddy, maize, jute, pulses, pineapple, banana, turmeric, ginger and tea. In recent past people have started to grow tea and horticulture crops especially pineapple by shifting from jute production which is the traditional cash crop of the district. Apart from agriculture other allied activities in the district are Dairy, Goatery, Piggery Fishery etc. vi. Work force participation As per Census 2011, Kishanganj district has a work force participation rate of 31.30% which is lower than that of state (33.36%).
