So I begin with a most deserving thank you for supporting BASH 2014. “All good things Prep” are blessed by your support. Our BASH 2014 theme, “The Great Outdoors,” conjures up an exciting sense of adventure; and that sense of adventure certainly has applied to me in my first year as president at Prep and both to me and my wife, Donnamaria, as we have made Omaha our new home. These past ten months have truly been an exciting, remarkable adventure in so many ways. Thank you to each and to all of you for the many kindnesses in welcoming and embracing us. I also want to thank the members of our BASH 2014 executive committee—Rick Berger ’76, Don Erftmier, Jr. ’83, Jen Kennedy, Julie Kenney, Dave Maenner, Katie Martin, Jill Morrissey and Beth Pusic—for working tirelessly since last September to put this night together. Without them, their teams and the legion of adult and student volunteers we are so blessed to have contributing to this event, it could not be the extraordinary adventure that it is. In a very real sense, all of our students experience high school at Prep as a daily, exciting adventure. Everything that we’re about every day—our faith, our faculty and staff, our curriculum, our retreat program, our service opportunities, our co-curricular activities, our facilities, our brotherhood, and our high level of expectations and support—is part of creating that sense of adventure for our students. And that sense of adventure nurtured here at Prep is exactly the mindset we want for each of our students as he embarks on that adventure called “life after Prep.” Students do not “go to” Creighton Prep. They “come from” Creighton Prep prepared not only in every way for college but also for living their lives as dynamic, intelligent, reflective and compassionate human beings. They become leaders in their respective fields in all areas of life not only here in Omaha but also throughout our country and our world. Just by being here tonight at BASH 2014, you are helping us make possible the Prep adventure for that next generation of talented young men coming from Prep. Thank you for your generous support of BASH 2014. Thank you for helping us mold young men who are not best “in” the world, but best “for” the world. May everyone have a wonderful adventure tonight as we support BASH 2014 and Creighton Prep. God bless you and your families. A.M.D.G. Loving and serving Him in all things, Michael A. Giambelluca President 4 A NOTE FROM JOHN NAATZ Welcome to the 2014 edition of BASH. Creighton Prep celebrates BASH’s 44nd anniversary! This year’s BASH theme is “The Great Outdoors”. Although most of our excellence takes place indoors, we welcome the opportunity to celebrate with plaid flannel shirts, hip waders and mosquito repellant! On behalf of the Creighton Prep community, we welcome you tonight. In my 32 years at Prep as teacher, coach, and administrator, it is wonderful to reconnect with alumni and parents (both current and past) as we enjoy the evening together. The BASH committee has toiled long hours to provide you with an evening of cordiality and warmth. We are extremely proud of our students’ accomplishments since last year’s BASH. Nine seniors were named National Merit Semifinalists for their exceptional achievement on National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Tests. The concert band’s attempt for 28 straight district superior ratings— similar to 28 straight state titles—will unfold later this month. Twenty-seven Prep musicians were all-state band, orchestra, and alternates. All-state choir included four students and three alternates. This year we again collaborated with Marian High School and performed two successful plays at Marian’s new performing arts center. Our school was also the recipient of the Omaha World-Herald All-Sports Award and the U.S. Cellular Cup for outstanding athletic participation. State championships were awarded in golf, summer baseball, swimming, club power lifting and T.E.A.M.S. (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science). Forty-eight gold keys, silver keys or honorable mentions were earned by Prep artists at the State of Nebraska’s Scholastic Art Awards. Successful retreat programs and outstanding liturgies assist our students in becoming men of faith. Local service activities such as Operation Others (which serves meals to over 1,500 families at Christmas), regional service trips to the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Native American Reservations, and international service excursions to the Dominican Republic and Mexico help make Prep a place where students become principled, value-oriented men for others. A new course this year also teaches our students about the plight of refugees in Omaha and asks them to be involved on a personal level with those in need. At Prep, we are blessed to have so many parents, alumni, and friends who give of their time and talents to help ensure our heritage. I want to thank each of you for the important role you are playing this evening. You are helping our students achieve the hallmarks of Jesuit education in becoming young men who are open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and committed to doing justice. A special thank you to the BASH chairs—Rick Berger ‘76 (Underwriting), Don Erftmier, Jr. ‘83 (Raffle), Jen Kennedy (Decorations), Julie Kenney (Catalog), Dave Maenner (Live Auction), Katie Martin (Silent Auction), Jill Morrissey (Patron Party) and Beth Pusic (Logistics)—and all the volunteers for their tireless efforts in making BASH an unforgettable night for everyone. Thanks to each of you for attending this evening’s festivities.
