MESSAGE I am very glad to note that at the instance of Dept. of Economics & Statistics the District Statistical Handbook of Thoothukudi is bring out for the year 2009-2010.It is a long felt need to have a data source book pertaining to this District. Attempt has been made to incorporate sector wise details right from Population, Climate and Rainfall , Agriculture, Irrigation, Animal Husbandary, Communication, Civil Supplies, Electricity , Education, Health &Family Welfare , Housing, Industries, Mining and Quarrying, Prices, Social Welfare ,Transport, etc.,will be more useful for Reserch Scholars, Planners , Policy makers and Administrators as a ready reckoner of this district. I expressed my warm and heartful wishes, appreciation and thanks for furnishing the data by various Departments both Central & State Government and the team of officials who take much strain to bring this issue in a successful manner, to formulate the blueprint for Thoothukudi district . PREFACE At the instance of the Government of TamilNadu District level Statistics are collected and complied every year on the basics of the instructions and Guidelines given by the Department of Economics and Statistics. Thoothukudi District was bifurcated from the erstwhile Tirunelveli on 28 th October 1986. This 24 th publication is brought out with the co-operation of all Government Departments, Public undertakings, local bodies, Quasi- Government organizations and Private institutions. This Statistical Hand Book - 2010 contains key statistical data pertaining to various Socio- Economics Indicators prevailing in the District. This Statistical Hand book is a ready reckoner for planners, Administrators, Research scholars and other social organizations related to Agricultural, Animal husbandry, Co-operation, Eductation, Fisheries etc., I extent my sincere thanks to all officers who had furnished the relevant data . SALIENT FEATURES OF THOOTHUKUDI DISTRICT Thoothukudi District carved out of the erstwhile Tirunelveli District in 1986 has certain rare features. The mixed landscape of the sea and the ‘their (waste) lands has imbibed some special traits in the character of the sons of the soil. Valour and devotion with burning patriotism are the watch words of the people here. The story of our country'’ freedom struggle cannot be complete without mentioning the supreme sacrifices of the illustrious sons of the district like V.O.Chidambaram Pillai who brought the first swadeshi ship “Galia” to the Tuticorin port and Veerapandi Kattabomman who waged a war against the British. The people’s poet Subramania Bharathi and the revolutionary Vanchinathan were also the proud sons of the soil. AREA AND POPULATION: The area of the district is 4621 Sq.k.m. and the population is 1572273 The district has three revenue divisions, eight taluks, twelve blocks, three municipalities, Nineteen town panchayats and 480 revenue village. Seven constituencies and one Loksabha are in the district. The total population of this district as per 2001 census is around fifteen lakhs. The density of population per Sq.km is 340 as against the 478 for the State. The sex ratio is 1050 females for every 1000 males. The percentage of literacy is 72. Fifty eight percent of the people live in the rural areas. The district has a SC population of 2.8 lakhs which is around 18% of the total population. AGRICULTURE: Agriculture is the main occupation on which 70% of the people depend on it .The main food crop in this district is paddy. Out of the total area of 470724 hectares,178083 hectares are brought under the cultivation of different crops which is nearly 38% of total area of the district. The important food crops in the district are paddy, Cholam, cumbu, ragi, varagu, samai and commercial crops like cotton, chilly, sugarcane and groundnut. IRRIGATION: The climate is hot and dry. The district has a coastal line of 163.5Kms. And territorial waters covering thousands of hectares. The district particularly in and around Tuticorin is the major salt producer in the state and contributes 30% of the total salt production of the country.The different sources of irrigation are channels. tanks and wells which covers 45673 hectares in the district. Out of this, 19493 hectares were covered by wells. INDUSTRY: The boom in the industrial sector has put the district prominently in the country’s industrial map. Heavy industries like Sterlite, SPIC, TAC, HWP and National Termal Power Plant promise hope for a bright future. Hundreds of ancillary units have also sprung up. Textile units and match industries crowd the kovilpatti belt. The fast growing Tuticorin port in the changing economic scenario has added pep to the development of the district. TUTICORIN PORT : Thoothukudi Port is garnering an important position in the southern part of India . During this year 1414 vessels entered this port and cargo to the tune of 19.49 Million tones are handled. Exports of certain raw materials and finished products are shipped to for about twenty foreign countries. Tuticorin port has been issued the prestigious ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 certificate for the port operation and services and had joined the select group of World ports by becoming the first Indian major port to get such certificate. TOURIST PLACES Tiruchendur Murugan Tample,Kalugumali Sculptures of Jain Temple,Kattabomman Memorial Fort at Panchalankurichi.Bharathi Manimandapam at Ettayapuram.Manadpadu Church,Paniya Matha Church(Lady Snow),Navathirupathi Temples and Vanathirupathi Temple near Nazerath are important tourist places in Thoothukudi district.
