24th Sunday Ordinary 15th September 2013 Year C Crazy in Love St Ignatius Church Would a responsible shepherd really leave ninety-nine Kensington Terrace, Toowong sheep defenceless in the wilderness while he goes in search of one that is lost? Would he not run the risk of losing many more? The gesture of carrying the sheep home on his shoulders, as if in triumph, and summoning his friends and neighbours for a joyful celebration seems Holy Spirit Church Harriett Street, Auchenflower extravagant, “over the top.” The friends and neighbours might in fact join in. But they might also mutter a bit among themselves: “He must be crazy about that sheep!” And this may in fact be the point the parable makes at the end. “Heaven,” that is, God and the entire heavenly court, rejoices over one sinner who repents more that over ninety-nine who have no need of repentance. Why? Because God is crazy with love over each individual human being and rejoices exuberantly over finding one that had been lost in the death that is sin. Jesus’ celebration of joyful meals with repentant sinners simply enacts on earth that exuberant heavenly joy. At stake, then, is the image Jesus’ critics have of God. In making them feel the “resistance” of the friends and neighbours to the shepherd’s invitation, the parable makes them confront the true depth of their own resistance to that Jesus is offering. The same pattern recurs in the case of the woman who spends the whole day turning her house upside down to find a single coin of no great value. Are the friends and neighbours summoned to rejoice with her really going to participate all that enthusiastically in her joy? Again, her behaviour seems extravagant. They might well remark: “She’s a bit obsessive about that coin. Surely it would have turned up one day. Why all this fuss” But again, the last sentence makes the point: “heaven” (here “the angels of God”) reacts like that to the recovery of a single sinner who had been lost. Why not share on earth the joy of the celebration in heaven? Fr B Byrne sj MASS TIMES ST IGNATIUS Toowong: Weekdays 5.30pm every afternoon; Saturday 9.00am & 6.00pm (Vigil); Sunday 7.00am & 5.00pm.
