ABSTRACT This guide is a summary of bursaries, loansand other financial assistance available for obtaining a de- gree, certificate or diploma 1 a university, technikonor college in the Republic of South Africa, Transkei, Bophuthatswana, Venda or Ciskei.Bursaries are indexed under the headings: title of the award, field of study for which the award is available, number available, financial value, duration of the award, insti- tution where award is tenairle, eligibility of applicant, service contract obligations, may the student apply, closing date for applications and address from whichfurther particulars can be obtained. The book also contains an alphabetical list of the fields of studyfor which the awards are available and an alphabetical hst of institutions where awardsare tenable. Approximately 1700 entries have been compiled, mainly from the latest available bursary brochuresof all the universities and technikons in the RSA and TBVC countries. The report is a useful aid for vocationalguidance officers and a reference work for prospective students seeking financial assistance forfurther study. The guide will be revised every two years. 7 -iv- HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE The aim of this book is to provide a summary of financial assistance available for obtaining a certificate, diploma or degree after Standard 10 at a university, college or technikon. The bursaries, loans and other forms of financial aid appear under the heading 'Awards' and are arranged in alphabetical order and then numbered. The following suggestions will help you find information on the awards: Awards are usually offered for a specific field of study and the index of fields of study is a useful aid for tracing the awards. Look for the field of study in which you are interested and consult the numbers thereunder in order to locate the awards. Also look under related fields of study. For example. for awards under 'Chemi. *y', one can also look under 'Natural Sciences' and for 'Civil Engineering' under 'Engineering'. A large number of awards are not connected to a specific field of study. These awards are listed under the title 'Any field of study'. Also look under this heading for awards in which you are interested. s Use the index of institutions where awards are tenable in the same way as the index of fields of study. " Apply for bursaries and loans in good time. The application form has to be obtained, com- pleted and submitted before the closing date indicated under the award. Do not apply 6r bursaries and loans for which you are not eligible as bursary donors usually adhere strictly to the conditions of the award. 011 Some organizations prefer not to make their bursaries widely known. This book is therefore not a complete account of all available financial assistance, but it does contain nearly all the awards available. If you do not find an applicable bursary/loan in it your chances of finding such a bursary/loan in another source are poor. Bursaries which are only available for study overseas are not included in this book. Such information may be found in The Grants Register (Editors: C.A. Lerner and R. Turner, St Martin's Press Inc., 175 Fifth Avenue, New York). In this guide matriculant means a person who intends to study at a university, technikon or college, student means a person who is already studying at a university, technikon or college, matriculation examination means the Matriculation Certificate examination or the Senior Cer- tificate examination (matriculation exemption) equivalent examination, any tertiary institution means any university, technikon or college which offers the course concerned and for which a Senior Certificate or equivalent is required, 'any university' or 'any university in the RSA' means that some of these awards are also ten- able for study abroad, bursary means that the award is made on the basis of academic achievement, financial need and other conditions, scholarship or merit award means that a person should have excelled academically to be eli- gible for this award, bursary loan means that the award usually includes a service contract which on breach of contract becomes a loan, and prize means that the prize money should be used for further study. Although the information in this publi:ation has been compiled carefully, some of the bursaries and loans may not be valid.Applicants should thus ascertain when applying whether the award is still available. There may also be new awards which the HSRC is processing, details of which do not appear in this publication Thanks are due to all bodies which co-operated in providing information.Particular appreciation is expressed to the universities, technikons, colleges and other organizations
