D.C. United Fact Sheet Team History D.C. United began competition in 1996, the inaugural season of Major League Soccer. Located in Washington, DC, United has won 12 international and domestic titles. Domestically, United is the most successful MLS team. United has won the U.S. Open Cup twice (’96 & ’08). Holds an MLS record for most MLS Cups (’96, ’97, ’99 &’04). Supporters' Shields (’97, ’99, ’06 & ‘07), winning each honor four times. United also was the first club to win both the MLS Cup and MLS Supporters' Shield consecutively. Ownership & Management William H.C. Chang secured full ownership of D.C. United in May 2009 and serves as the Executive Chairman. William H.C. Chang serves as Chairman of Westlake International Group and is the driving force behind the company's vision and direction. Chang is also a primary stakeholder of the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball. Previous United investors include Anschultz Entertainment Group (AEG), Victor McFarlane, Kevin Payne, and Blue Devil Development. Sponsorship & Manufacturer D.C. United’s current sponsor is Volkswagon Group of America. The automotive company initiated a five-year sponsorship deal that includes logo placement on United’s jersey, complimentary parking to the first fifty Volkswagon vehicles at each home game, and numerous signage throughout the stadium. United’s manufacturer is Adidas. The sporting goods company supplies United with all equipment. Previous sponsors include Sierra Mist, Mastercard, Ledo’s Pizza, Papa John’s Pizza, Verizon Wireless, and Geico. Stadium Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium is United’s home field. The stadium holds 45,000. The stadium has hosted numerous international soccer matches as well as the Washington Redskins of the National Football League and the Washington Nationals of Major League Baseball.
