A producer with an incredible work rate, most will know him through his most critically acclaimed album Chinoiseries from 2007, a great album created from Vietnamese found-sounds. After some extensive rifling through dusty crates when he went to Vietnam for the first time, the land of his grandparents, he managed to bring back some 30 incredible Chinese and Vietnamese old vinyls. The album became the trademark sound of Onra, once the song “The Anthem” was chosen to illustrate a Coca-Cola TV commercial for Beijing Olympics. While Chinoiseries may be made via similar means – sampling old dusty vinyl – the sounds are distinctively Western and rooted in the 80s! Long since established as one of the beat scenes go to guys, he flips the style on Long Distance to bring a distinctively French feel. The French, who have been championing the modern soul and boogie sound for time, influenced Onra on what can be considered a personal homage to the R&B and Soul sounds of mid 80s Paris. 21 tracks in all – a mix of instrumentals and vocals – this album is hard to pigeon hole. It’s not straight up beat based Hip Hop, nor is it needlessly wonky. Finely crafted songs with high production values, Long Distance features vocal contributions from T3 of Slum Village on “The One”, Olivier Daysoul, fresh from Hudson Mohawke’s Butter LP, is on two tracks – the title track “Long Distance” and “My Mind is Gone”. In addition, Reggie B guests on “High Hopes” along with appearences from French soul-jazz keys player Buddy Sativa (Favorite Records) and Walter Mecca. Properties Of Steel DISC TWO — INSTRUMENTALS A creative force within New York City’s underground Hip Hop scene, Godfather Don first appeared in 1991 with Hazardous, released on the Select imprint. A few years later, the Don appeared on, and produced, the Ultramagnetic MCs’ Four Horsemen, which led to a collaboration with that group’s standout, Kool Keith, called The Cenobites. An EP was issued on Fondle ‘Em Records, which was started by New York B-boy, DJ, and man about town Bobbito Garcia. The material on the EP had originally been recorded as gags or promos for Garcia’s underground Hip Hop radio show on New York’s WKCR. The Cenobites EP was then reissued by Fondle ‘Em as a full-length LP. Throughout the 1990s, Godfather Don continued to work as a producer, working on tracks from Kool Keith, Hostyle, and Ayatollah, among others. In 1999, he released his second album, Diabolique, on which his flow was very similar to the bludgeoning raps of his 1991 debut. Originally released in 1999, the album was released on the Hydra Enter- tainment imprint, for which Godfather Don continued to record for, releasing several 12” singles in the late 90s and early 2000s. Don is embraced by a wide swath of fans, both for his beats and his bludgeoning, complex style (which has drawn comparisons to Chuck D), arguably at its peak here. Guests Kool Keith and Sir Menelik are perfect foils, providing just enough variation while not diluting the “solo album” experience. This is one of the great lost pieces of history from NYC’s ‘backpack’ era - there is no sophmore slump apparent here.
