British Association of the Var Putting people and social needs together since 1998 Association Loi 1901 No: W831001750 www.baofthevar.com November 2013 Newsletter No 138 Boules Competition The scene was set and battle lines drawn at St Antonin on 30 September for the regular boules competition between the BAV and the Friends of the Bereavement Support Network (an independent support charity assisting the bereaved, those suffering terminal illnesses, and their families). The weather was smiling on us but we had an uphill struggle having lost the competition against the BSN on three previous occasions. 16 members of the BAV boules group were prepared to sacrifice themselves at the bouledrome but all was not lost and, in fact, the BAV managed to secure the title in the individual competition by winning 9 - 7 although we resorted to type in the team competition by losing 5 - 2. The event culminated by a superb lunch at Lou Cigaloun with a wonderful convivial atmosphere. 95€ was raised towards the BAV welfare fund and an amount also went to the BSN. Our thanks go to all those who provided snacks and coffee and to the restaurant for their service. Spectrum Group Seminar The latest Spectrum Group seminar was held at the centrally located St Endréol Golf Club at La Motte on 9 October and featured enthusiastic and enlightening speakers from a range of companies including financial funds, advisors, solicitors and a foreign exchange company. Once again a wealth of advice was given on financial matters, together with a useful update on tax changes which have recently been brought in. Inevitably more questions were raised than answered on this complex subject and the advisors were on hand after the presentation to discuss any points raised. Alexandra Lewis-Smith won a £50 voucher from britishcornershop.co.uk. Our thanks once again to Mike Lorimer for arranging this. Mike is available to members to discuss any points, in which case please contact him. His details are contained in the advert in this newsletter.
