Born in Scotland, he graduated with an MA in Political Econom y and Political Science from the University of Glasgow. Recently aw arded an honorary doctorate from Napier University Edinburgh, he was elected as Lord Rector of the University of St Andrew s in 1999. He has enjoyed a distinguish ed career in the print media, as co rrespondent and editor of The Econom ist, in both the UK and US, and for 11 years, as editor of The Sunday Times. Simultaneous to this, he presided over high-profile launches, including Sky Te levision which brought multi-ch a n n e l TV to Britain. In 1999 he launched The Sunday Business, now The Business, which quickly becam e a critical and circulation success. Since 1996, he has been publish er of Press Holdings, the ow ners of The Busin ess in London and The Scotsm an, Scotland on Sunday and Evening News in Edinburgh. As a broadcaster, he has made regular appearances on both sides of the Atlantic, anchoring and interview ing for topical and political programmes. He is now one of the BBC’s leading political presenters on program m es including The Daily Politics (BBC2) and This W eek (BBC1). As a business co nsultant, he has been involved in European digital developm ents, as well as advising on the acquisition and developm ent of a num ber of publications. He is much in dem and as a lecturer in British and European politics and econom ics, and he has addressed the world’s major IT co m p anies on the impact of information technology on business. Andrew is a highly effective chairman with an extraordinary ability to cut to the heart of im portant issu es and ensure their su ccessful resolution. Hailing from St Andrew s, he was educated at George Watso n’s College in Edinburgh. He qualified as a Solicitor in 1978 and began practicing law in the city before setting up business in Dunfermline. A natural entrepreneur, he built up one of the largest so licitors and estate agency practices in Fife. He initiated the ‘one stop sh o p’ policy where all property transactions were carried out under one roof. Follow ing the purchase of office prem ises to support his grow ing so licitors practice, he set up R & G Property Investments in 1981, which involved the purchase of commercial properties for lease to others. Gifford then set up his ow n finance and investment co ncern, follow ed by a building co m p any in 1985, under the R & G Group. A keen business sen se revealed a niche in the late 80’s for providing finance to develop new co m p anies, resulting in a venture capital wing. In 1995 Gifford retired as Senior Partner of W & A.S. Bruce Solicitors to co ncentrate on outside business interests, while co ntinuing to work as a co n sultant to builders and developers. He is a sh areholder in several co m p anies, including Haymarket Management Services, the prestigious co rporate fraud detection and investigation body, which has been responsible for the detection of multi-million pound recoveries for various blue chip clients. Gifford has for many years been closely asso ciated with a large num ber of Edinburgh based charities and community activities. In Rotary he served as Club President, District Chairman and Scottish Chairman. Other organisations with which he has close links include Riding for the Disab led, Phoenix Club (disab led Adults), several groups supporting under-privileged children and a num ber of services based at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary which support the mentally retarded. He is a Trustee of the Barbara Stew art Cancer Care Trust which is pioneering the treatment of cancer through photo dynam ic therapy. He brings a particular brand of expertise to the Castle FM initiative with a sp eciality of developing fledgling co m p anies. He is Castle FM ’s co m p any secretary and its trusted legal and financial expert. Her first professional radio post was at Radio Forth, where sh e won a prestigious Sony Gold Aw ard for her coverage of the Edinburgh Festival. She then moved to Classic FM as a producer, overseeing a wide portfolio of program m ing including the Evening Concert, all w eekend programmes and live co ncert broadcasts.
