James Beard Foundation 4 James Beard Foundation 4 The Oscars of the Food World The James Beard Awards are prestigious honors bestowed annually to members of the food industry, from chefs and restaurateurs, to designers, sommeliers, journalists, and authors. 2020 will mark the 30th anniversary of the James Beard Awards—in over three decades, the program has come to recognize not only those performing at the height of gastronomy, but also those who are creating a better food world. James Beard Foundation 2019 Annual Report 10 11 A Diverse Army of Advocates for Change The Chefs Boot Camp for Policy and Change provides an opportunity for civically and politically-minded chefs to become powerful change-agents. Participants receive advocacy and media training while learning about important issues, challenges, and opportunities facing the food world. More than 250 chef-advocates have participated, including James Beard Award winners Charleen Badman (Scottsdale, AZ), Rick Bayless (Chicago), and Renee Erickson (Seattle), who have taken their training to the halls of Congress to fight for food waste reduction, sustainable proteins, supplemental nutrition assistance programs, childhood nutrition, and more. Through our suite of programs, including Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership and Owning It, we provide resources, mentorship, and networking opportunities to overcome systemic economic and cultural barriers preventing women-owned businesses from achieving longevity and growth. More than 1,000 chefs participate in the Foundation’s sustainability programs, including Waste Not, the Blended Burger Project, and SmartCatch. The scope of scholarships offered has broadened to include all aspects of food studies, such as wine programs and sustainable farming. As of 2018, the Foundation will have awarded nearly $8 million in financial aid to 2,000 recipients.
