Digitized with the permission of the FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF MILITARY AFFAIRS FLORIDA NATIONAL GUARD SOURCE DOCUMENT ADVISORY Digital images were created from printed source documents that, in many cases, were photocopies of original materials held elsewhere. The quality of these copies was often poor. Digital images reflect the poor quality of the source documents. Where possible images have been manipulated to make them as readable as possible. In many cases such manipulation was not possible. Where available, the originals photocopied for publication have been digitized and have been added, separately, to this collection. Searchable text generated from the digital images, subsequently, is also poor. The researcher is advised not to rely solely upon text-search in this collection. RIGHTS & RESTRICTIONS Items collected here were originally published by the Florida National Guard, many as part of its SPECIAL ARCHIVES PUBLICATION series. DIGITIZATION Titles from the SPECIAL ARCHIVES PUBLICATION series were digitized by the University of Florida in recognition of those serving in Florida's National Guard, many of whom have given their lives in defense of the State and the Nation. Several are commissioned and completed each year and prints of all the paintings in the series are available for general distribution to the public. Unfortunately, Florida has but a single painting in the series to represent its more than four hundred years of Militia and National guard service to Florida and Country. In 1989, it was decided to explore the possiblity of establishing our own heritage painting series. There appeared to be some private monies available. Further, state law mandates the expenditure of a small percentage of all state construction funds for public art. With these two potential sources of funding available, the Florida National Guard Heritage Art Series was established. (Although initially, our primary focus will be on the creation of the heritage painting series, we retain the flexibility to include other forms of art as part of our program. For example, a print derived from a photograph of the bronze statue representing a Florida Guardsman during the Second World War, the centerpiece of the Florida Regiment's Memorial at Camp Blanding, is included in Phase I of our series). Most of the individual paintings created for the series and all of those obtained with state funds, will remain the property of the Department of Military Affairs. There may be paintings, financed with private funds, which might be retained by individuals or corporate sponsors. However, in every instance, the Department will retain all rights for the reproduction and distribution of prints of the paintings. (And the Department will retain the right of first refusal should a privately-owned painting ever be placed on the market for sale). Our ultimate objective, aside from obtaining fine works of art, is to create a series of prints depicting the historical heritage of Florida's Militia/State Troops/National Guard since its founding in 1565 and making prints of those events available to the widest possible public audience within the State of Florida. We hope all public schools, governmental agencies and many commercial establishments will wish to display one or more of these art works. Of course, the prints will be available for use in illustrating historical publications. There are at least three reasons we feel this program is desirable and reflective of our needs and our public responsibilities. First, the establishment of this series will greatly improve our ability to meet the public art respoinsibilities associated with new construction expenditures. Secondly, it will help us better serve the expressed needs and historical interests of our veterans and currently serving personnel. Finally, this series, even in its earliest phases, will significantly improve and broaden the public's understanding for and appreciation of our state's incredible military heritage. FUNDING: PAINTINGS 1. Armory construction funds; mandated art expenditures 2. Private individuals, corporations and foundations 3. Associations of veterans and currently-serving Florida National Guardsmen FUNDING: PRINTS There are to be two kinds of prints to be produced in the series: 1. Normal poster-quality prints produced for free public distribution 2. Signed artist's proofs which will be offered for sale through an appropriate entity to help finance additional paintings and prints Possible private and public funding sources for both types of prints are currently being explored (summer 1992). ARTISTS The core paintings in the series have been done by, or contracted to, Mr. Jackson Walker, a Florida military artist from Orlando. Under the guidance of the Cultural Affairs Division of the Department of State, we have contracted three additional Florida artists to produce paintings for Phase I of the series. (Mr. Donald Renner of Fort Lauderdale; Mr. John Briggs of Tallahassee; Mr. Ronald Shelley of Miami) We demand a realistic style and historical accuracy of the highest order, qualities shared by all our artists. HERITAGE PAINTING SERIES: PHASE I 1990-1992 Phase I of the series contains twelve thematic paintings and three portraits and will be complete by the spring of 1992. (Additionally, the Air
