And what a great way to finish the season than be at home in a local derby game. We welcome Kevin and his staff as well as Manukau’s players and supporters. With this we warmly welcome our sponsors, life members, club patrons and supporters to today’s game. We look forward to seeing you all in the clubrooms after the game to partake in our festivities. To Preston and Sean and the Reserve guys who are our first game today I know you will be gunning to get the points and finish the season on a win. These guys have had a decent run this year and have represented the club proudly. We must pay credit to Preston and Sean as this has been their first season coaching at this level – we take our hats off to you and the players for the commitment made this season. On a down note we were saddened to hear of a passing within Sean’s family. We as a club extend our condolences to you Sean. Prior to each game we will observe a moment’s silence – we ask that you bear with us in these occasions. Mark, Hans, Prashanth, Scotty and the men’s first team squad. These guys will be eager to go out and put up a good tussle and halt Manukau’s chances of becoming league champions. Kevin and his lads have played some great football this year and will want to do so again today. But I know the Papatoetoe lads will go out and give it their all to get the points on offer. At this time I would like to give a huge and sincere thank you to Mark for the time he has had at and given to Papatoetoe AFC from coaching U19s, assisting our Reserves and as head coach of our 1st team – we thank you. We wish you the best of luck in the United States and for your future plans. The fact that both our men's and women's teams have secured NRFL positions again for next season is a good achievement for our club, and we hope to build on this again next year. In 2017 we look to build on further our current foundations. As some people know we will be looking at a coach appointment, president appointment and the opportunity for people to join our Executive Committee and Sub-Committees. These roles are vital for contribution to the everyday running and strategic planning of the club and we would love to have those with the expertise and passion for the club to join. If you or somebody you know is interested in joining one of our committee groups, please contact one of our existing committee members for further details. It is getting increasingly difficult for small clubs to compete in the NRFL, and as an amateur organisation we rely heavily on grant funding, donations and sponsorship. Hans Anema, Executive Committee 3 2 Last Week’s NRFL Action Manukau City have secured one of two promotion spots into the Lotto NRFL Division One for the 2017 season with two games to spare while Northland earned their first win of the season to keep their NRFL dreams alive. Uba Nunez gave Kevin Fallon’s side the best possible start at Walter Massey Park this afternoon with a stunning 25-yard volley and then went on to play a part in City’s second of the match. Nunez sent a Crossfield ball to Stephen Money who whipped a cross into the box for Leo Berlim to header home. Te Atatu tried to crawl their way back into the match but the best they could do is grab one goal back through Lome Funafuti via the penalty spot. Fallon’s side now turn their attention to taking out the title while at the other end of the table Northland continue to fight their way out of relegation. The Northerners must win their remaining two games to have any chance of staying up and while that might seem unlikely given the sides results to date, they can certainly take motivation from today’s 3-1 win against WaiBOP outfit Claudelands Rovers. A Steve Schimmel brace and a goal to Jordan Rudman helped their side to their first victory of the 2016 season. Waitemata have kept the pressure on league leaders Manukau with a 4-2 victory over Onehunga Mangere. Leighton Wills, Craig Wylie, Nathan Rolllinson and Jesse Smith netted for Michael Mayne’s side while Onehunga got on the scoreboard via Sangster Crawford and Neil Heron. Rounding out the weekend’s action, third place Takapuna was held to a scoreless draw against Ngaruawahia United while Asher Trotter netted a first half goal to give Albany a 1-0 victory over Papatoetoe. Next Saturday we have four games at home so still plenty of action to watch. Thanks go to all our coordinators, coaches and managers for their time and effort during the season; a rather disjointed one at that due to the weather but so be it. League-wise the season has gone well for our teams. Working through the grades: 11th grade Division 2 South – Pirates 2nd out of 6 teams 11th grade Division 3 South – Warriors 1st out of 8 teams and Pumas 3rd 13th grade Division 1B – Pumas currently 2nd out of 10 teams with three games in hand 13th grade Division 2 Girls – Pixies 5th out of 10 teams 14th grade Division 1 – Lightning currently 2nd out of 10 teams 14th grade Division 2 – Pumas 8th out of 10 teams 16th grade Division 2 – currently 7th out of 10 teams with two games to play 17th grade Division 2 – currently 4th out of 6 teams with two games to play Points tables are not published for 9th and 10th grade, this being a hot topic raised at the NZ Football workshop facilitated by AFF yours truly attended on Wednesday. Our 8th grade Fun Football team won the cluster festival tournament last weekend over Papatoetoe United in a penalty shootout. They also attended a tournament hosted by Three Kings United on the Sunday drawing two games and losing one. We cannot forget our 4-6 year First Kicks squad that includes second generation players of club members and our 7th grade Fun Football squad. Our Warriors and Pixies are now sporting jackets courtesy of Max McDermid from New World Papatoetoe. Please support our local supermarket. Pamela Luhrs, Executive/Junior Committee 6 5 Women’s Update The season ended last weekend for our Division 3 Cougars & Cubs team who went down in the playoff series against Waiuku, the team they beat in the championship round and the only team to do so. Penalty shoot outs appear to be their bain; perhaps they should take lessons from our 8th grade squad. Our team finished second in the championship round to Waiuku who are on track to win the playoff series to follow winning the league.
