Helen Porterfield uj&fao Helen Kirk Porterfield, 91, of Barnesville Health Care Center, formerly of Bethesda, died Sunday at Barnesville Hospital. She was born April 22, 1899 near Bethesda, a daughter of the late William and Lillian Blackburn Kirk. She was a member of the Barnesville Assembly of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, James T. Porterfield; two sons, Robert, killed at Pearl Harbor and James, killed in Korean Con­ flict. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Harold (Helen) Bishop of Pleasant Grove; one son, William Porterfield of Canfield; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Wheeling, WV 26003. Ralph A. Porterfield Ralph A. Porterfield, 90, entered into rest Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Elmcroft. He was the husband of the late Audrey Marie Porterfield. Mr. Porterfield was a native of Belmont, Ohio, grew up on a dairy farm in Southeastern Ohio and farmed with his father. He was a WWII veteran of the US Army in the South Pacific. Mr. Porterfield graduated from The Ohio State University. He was a professor of Dairy Science at University* of Maryland and retired from The Ohio Stale University, Professor Emeritus in Dairy Science. Mr. Porterfield worked with 4-H and college students all over Ohio and Maryland. He entered his college teams in interna­ tional competitions throughout Europe, placing his group first in international competition. He was a cattle judge at several state fairs. In retirement, Mr. Porterfield wrote 11 books of poetry. He was married for 64 years, was a good son, broth­ er, husband, father, grandfa­ ther and great-grandfather. He exemplified the qualities of the people who lived through the Great Depression. He was a simple, frugal, honest, depend­ able, God-fearing, trustworthy and honorable man. Family members include his sons, Gary Porterfield (Lynn) of Evans, Ga., R. Ira Porterfield (Susan) of Golden, Colo.; grandchildren, Jamie Porterfield, Md. Va. He was born Aug. 5, 1926 in St. Clairsville, Ohio, son of the late Glenn Alexander Porterfield and Georgia Dean Hanson Porterfield. He was a retired employee from United Dairy at Martins Ferry; a member of the Calvary Presbyterian Church at St. Clairsville; a member of the St. Clairsville Ruritan Club; National Board of Directors for the Ruritan; Belmont County Fair Board; and the Area 4-H Advisory Council. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Lee Porterfield; and two brothers, Lyle and Kenneth Porterfield. He was born Sept. 13, 1918, in St. Clairsville, a son of the late Dr. C.V. and Gertrude Carlile Porterfield. Porterfield was a partner of Dr. Robert N. Lewis at the St. Clairsville Clinic, a member of the First Presby­ terian Church, and a veteran of World War II. He was a graduate of St. Clairsville High School, Ohio Wesleyan Univer­ sity, and the Jefferson Medical School. He was a member of the Belmont County, the Ohio County and the Ohio State medical associations, and an eight-year memoir of the St. Clairs- ville-Richland School Board.
