Cardinal Makes 16th NCAA

on their home court. The Cardinal routed defending National Champion Washington in the NCAA semifinal, but fell 27-30, 30-26, 30-28, 30-27 to Nebraska in the championship match.

Final Four Appearance in 2006

Stanford had much to be proud of in 2006, however. Of the team’s 30 wins, 25 were by 3-0 margins. The Cardinal produced four All-Americans, matching the highest single-season total in program history, with Bryn Kehoe, Cynthia Barboza, Foluke Akinradewo and Kristin Richards all receiving the honor. Five players earned All-Conference recognition, and nine of the ten eligible team members earned Pac-10 All-Academic honors. It was a record year for Richards, as the senior outside hitter finished her career ranked in the top-10 in program history in nine career categories. The Orem, Utah native shattered the program dig record, notching 1,597 in her time on the Farm. She also graduated as one of the top five players in kills, service aces and total attacks and found herself in 10 places on the Stanford single-season charts. Akinradewo set a single-season hitting percentage record with a .431 clip and Kehoe continued her climb to fourth on the career assists chart. Barboza led the Cardinal in kills (463), service aces (48) and points (562.5).
After a one-year absence, the collegiate women’s volleyball program that has become a fixture of the NCAA Final Four was back in the spotlight. In 2006, the Stanford Cardinal made a 16th Final Four appearance and advanced to its 12th national title match, figures unparalleled by any program in the country. The Cardinal finished the season with a No. 2 national ranking, a 30-4 record and an unprecedented 10th Pac-10 title, all collected while playing 15 matches against ranked opponents and 22 matches against eventual NCAA Tournament participants. Stanford was nearly perfect in the preseason, going 9-1 with a small hiccup against BYU in the Cougars’ home tournament. With the exception of that match, the Cardinal entered the Pac-10 season having not lost a single game and was ready for the challenging conference season. Despite battling a conference schedule that included five top-10 teams, the Cardinal came out on top with a 16-2 Pac-10 record.
At the end of the run, Stanford said goodbye to four outstanding seniors:

Richards, Nji Nnamani, Lizzie Suiter and Michelle Mellard. The foursome finished their careers having helped Stanford to two Final Four appearances, a 111-23 record and the 2004 National Championship.
Stanford received an automatic bid to its 26th-straight NCAA Tournament, and eased past Sacramento State in the First Round in Maples Pavilion. In the Second Round, the squad won a thrilling five-game battle with Missouri to advance to the Regional in Austin, Texas. In Austin, Stanford swept Bay Area rival Cal, before knocking off the Texas Longhorns
