Mumbai Local Sightseeing Tours HALF DAY MUMBAI CITY TOUR Visit Gateway of India, Mumbai's principle landmark. This arch of yellow basalt was erected on the waterfront in 1924 to commemorate King George V's visit to Mumbai in 1911. Drive pass the Secretariat of Maharashtra Government and along the Marine Drive which is fondly known as the 'Queen's Necklace'. Visit Jain temple and Hanging Gardens, which offers a splendid view of the city, Chowpatty, Kamala Nehru Park and also visit Mani Bhavan, where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his visits to Mumbai. Drive pass Haji Ali Mosque, a shrine in honor of a Muslim Saint on an island 500 m. out at sea and linked by a causeway to the mainland. Stop at the 'Dhobi Ghat' where Mumbai's 'dirties' are scrubbed, bashed, dyed and hung out to dry. Watch the local train passing close by on which the city commuters 'hang out like laundry' ‐ a nice photography stop. Continue to the colorful Crawford market and to the Flora fountain in the large bustling square, in the heart of the city. Optional visit to Prince of Wales museum (closed on Mondays). Excursion to Elephanta caves Visit Elephanta caves by motor launch. Deriving its name from a stone elephant discovered by the Portuguese, this beautiful green island is about one hour’s boat ride from Bombay harbor. The celebrated Hindu cave temple on the island is excavated from a cliff high above the water and is approached by long flight of steps. These temples carved during the Golden age of the Guptas have been inspired by the worship of Lord Shiva. The sculptures are beautifully executed and the most outstanding of these is the Maheshmurthy or Trimurthy, a 5m (18 ft.) high, three headed bust hewn from a single rock representing the three aspects of Lord Shiva viz. The Creator, The Preserver and The Destroyer. Starting with drive pass of Ballard Pier – Build during British rule and in this whole area we will see British Style Buildings as you leave the Pier, you first visit Gateway of India, a triumphal arch to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary, complete with four turrets and intricate latticework carved into the yellow basalt stone, walk towards David Sassoon Library‐ 155‐year‐old library housed in the David Sassoon building, this Romanesque structure, completed in 1870, is built from the same yellow stone as the rest of the buildings in the row‐‐ Elphinstone College, the Army and Navy Building and Watson's Hotel & then towards Prince of Wales Museum designed in the Indo‐Saracenic style with yellow and blue stones. Walk past Institute of Science, established in 1920, managed by the Government of Maharashtra and affiliated to the University of Mumbai, is a full‐fledged premier post‐graduate center for teaching and research in science, Mumbai University‐ known earlier as University of Bombay is one of the oldest and premier Universities in India & Churchgate railway station. Later visit Flora Fountain beautifully ornamented stone fountain located in the Fort business district in the middle of South Mumbai. The fountain was built in 1864 and represents the Roman Goddess Flora, the Goddess of Abundance. Today it is a heritage structure. The square in which the fountain stands was officially named as Hutatma Chowk (Martyr's Crossroad) in 1960. At the end visit Chatrapati Shivaji terminus‐ earlier known as Victoria Terminus, the main railway station in Mumbai is thought to be architecturally one of the best stations in the world. Built in 14th century, today the devotees come to the water tank to take a holy dip in what is believed the water of scared Ganges. The Walkeshwar temple, close by, dedicated to Lord Shiva is interesting. The temple comes to life during the month of Shravan [July‐august] and during the Hindu holidays. You can also have the glimpse of the monks who come to stay at the temple. The towers of silence is the ancient way the Parsee community practice their Aerial Burial ; where the dead bodies are given to birds as prey. 6] Haji Ali Tomb: [SUFI ISLAM], built in the middle of the Arabian Sea, Haji Ali is today the tombof the famous Sufi saint from 17th Century. Today people from all the faiths come here to pay their respects to the saint. The view of the Tomb is beautiful during the sunset.
