Papers, 1905-1974. Scope and wntent notes (draft, Janet Hodgson, April 1975) This collection of 21 - 16" boxes (Annex) and 2 oversize boxes (Olin) of plans and blueprints contains the professional papers of the late Clarence S. Stein. Mr. Stein sorted and divided his own material and with but two additions, research material and a box of other people's writings, the basic integrity of Mr. Stein's own sorting remains. A most organized man, Mr. Stein provided us with an index to his life and work, to be found in the black lmse-leaf notebmk in Box 1. Beginning with letters discussing the disposal of his papers, an index and alphabetical listing indicating where major works are to be found within the material, Mr. Stein, working in roughly 10-year time spans beginning with his family history, outlines his professional career and includes sections on friends W' and associates, honors received, and travels. Following Mr. Stein's basic divisions, this collection has been arranged into 8 sections- .Jobs and Proposed Jobs; Writings and Speeches, General File; Research File; Correspondence: Photos, Plans, Maps and other Illustrations; Reprints and Articles of other professional planners. Arranged in chronological order, Job Files reflect Mr. Stein's varied interests in his field. He was an architect for public buildings C1:2 6 5!, places of worship (1:34), museums (2 :2 & 3) and private residences l1:6) and he was interested in public housing serving on Gov. Alfred W. Smith's Pacon- struction Commission for the State of New York as Secretary of its Housing Committee (1111-14). His interest in new town development is reflected here in Radbuxn, N.J. (1:18-33) and Kitimat, B.C. (2:38-45 and 3:l-281 and in self-contained garden cities and other housing developments with emphasis on garden apartment complexes such as Sunnyside Gardens, N.Y. i1:g-lO). Hillside Homes, Borough of the Bronx, N.Y. i2:4-12) and Chatham Village, ,# '\ Pittsburgh, Pa. (k-39-40). Proposed Jobs reflects ideas, designs and plans for jobs which never materialized (3:35-39 arid 4d-29). The second large area in the collection reflects Clarence Stein's Writings and Speeches. In Box 4 is found material dealing with the pub- lishing of his book, Toward New Tom for America, with photos, plans and maps used in the book also in evidence. Boxes 5 and 6 produce in chronologi- cal order copies of his articles and speeches as listed by Mr. Stein. The General File, also arranged in chronological order, includes the records of many interests such as his unpublished writing (11:w-27) in- cluding several books (7:16 & 17, 9:27-50 and 10:l-62), his resettlement reports for Greenbelt towns in 1935 (7:lO-15), and Greenbelt disposal in 1951-1953 (9:4-261, his material on the Regional Plan Association of America, and its successor, the Regional Development Council of America (7:3 & 9:12-211, and Community planning studies and cost studies (7:32-41 and 7:42-64). An addition to Mr. Stein's order was a section of reseapch material I1 (boxes 11, 12, and 131, reference material collected on the Tennessee Valley Authority, on research facility locations in the suburban New .York City area, on industrial and metropolitan dispersal in the United States, plus material collected in countries outside our
