GTCYS Merchandise Inclement Weather Policy EVENTS AND CLASSES COLLEGE PLANNING WORKSHOP Monday, October 17, 6 – 7:30pm Good Samaritan Church, Edina (Symphony’s rehearsal venue) Free and open to all GTCYS students and families, this is a chance to ask candid questions to a panel of college music professors as well as professional musicians about applying to music schools and studying music performance or music education in college as a major or participating in college music ensembles as an extracurricular activity. We’re excited to announce this year’s panelists: David Carter, Professor of Music – Cello, St. Olaf College Emilia Mettenbrink, Freelance violinist, Minnesota Orchestra and SPCO (and GTCYS alum!) Joseph Peters, Principal Oboe, Minnesota Orchestra (and GTCYS alum!) Laura Sindberg, Director of Undergraduate Studies, University of Minnesota School of Music CONCERTO COMPETITION Learn more about GTCYS’ Annual Concerto Competition and register to compete: Open to all GTCYS students, enrolled in any of the eight orchestras Register by Monday, December 12 Preliminary Round (closed to the public) on Sunday, January 8 Finals Round (open to the public) on Sunday, January 22 Winner(s) will perform with Symphony on Saturday, April 22 Click here for Guidelines and to apply GTCYS PARENT APPRECIATION NIGHTS IN OCTOBER During these engaging sessions, parents will have the opportunity to mingle over refreshments, ask questions to GTCYS’ Director of Development, Ruth Watkins, or Executive Director, Megen Balda, and listen to a “show and tell” demonstration session with the orchestra. CONCERT ATTIRE Each orchestra has its own dress code for concerts which students must follow. Inappropriate attire may lead to dismissal from a concert. Unacceptable attire includes low rise pants, jeans, bare midriffs, legs or feet, short skirts, short-sleeve or sleeveless shirts, white socks, and athletic shoes. Philharmonia East and West, Sinfonia, Concertino, and Camerata attire: Ladies Floor- or ankle-length black skirt or black dress slacks (not form-fitting) Bright white (not off-white) long-sleeved, non-transparent blouse Black hosiery (no bare legs or feet) Black dress shoes Gentlemen Black dress pants Bright white long-sleeved button-down shirt Black bow tie Black socks Black dress shoes Concert Orchestra, Philharmonic and Symphony attire: Ladies Floor- or ankle-length, long-sleeved black dress OR Floor- or ankle-length black skirt and long-sleeved, non-transparent black blouse OR Black dress slacks (not form-fitting) and long-sleeved, non-transparent black blouse Black hosiery Black dress shoes (no open toes or sandals) Gentlemen Black suit, tuxedo, or black jacket with black pants Bright white long-sleeved button-down shirt Black bow tie Black socks Black dress shoes Concert Black is an online source for concert performance clothing. www.concertblack.com or 1-888-94-BLACK. PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT THE DRESS REHEARSAL AND CONCERT Fall Festival Dress Rehearsal Volunteer Request (Direct students backstage and in the lobby.) Fall Festival Concert Volunteer Request (Free tickets for parents who supervise students in the second and third balconies.) PLAY THE VIOLA! GTCYS is excited to offer its unique viola trial program for the fourth year. GTCYS will provide a viola at no charge to interested violinists. Contact your conductor at rehearsal for details and to receive your trial instrument. All-State Participants: Several GTCYS students are members of the 2016–17 Minnesota All-State Orchestra, including: o Sonia Driskill (Symphony, harp) o Juliana Kilcoyne (Symphony, viola) o Shaelyn Muldowney, (Philharmonic, viola) o Kate Stiglicz (Symphony, cello) Annie Amen and Nathan Metzler (Symphony, trumpets) performed Taps at the Minnesota Fallen Firefighters’ Memorial Service at the State Capitol on Sunday, September 25. Evan Kuehne (Sinfonia, trumpet), received Champion at the Dakota County Fair 4H in Performing Arts grades 3-5 with his trumpet solo of “Kinglet” by Voxman. Joel Kuehne (Concertino, horn), received a 4H Blue Ribbon at the MN State Fair and Champion at the Dakota County Fair in Performing Arts grades 6-8 with his piano solo of Tchaikovsky's “Scenes from Swan Lake.” STUDENT VOLUNTEER AND ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES: GTCYS & SPCO GTCYS Student Mentorships for Philharmonic and Symphony students: Learn more about GTCYS’ Mentorship opportunities and apply to be a mentor SPCO seeks GTCYS volunteers on November 12: Click here to learn more and sign up Chamber Music Institute (CMI): (Symphony and Philharmonic only) This is an elite chamber music coaching and side-by-side performance experience for Philharmonic and Symphony musicians with members of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.
