INDEX TO EPISCOPAL CHURCH RECORDS 1820 - 1851 ST. LUKE'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH ST. PAUL'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH ROCHESTER, NEW YORK Prepared and published by members of the Rochester Genealogical Society, 1982 Digitized and re-formatted 2007 PREFACE This book is more than an index of the Episcopal church records of Rochester between 1820 and 1851. In all cases nothing was left out of the citation that could, in any way, be of help to the researcher. In some cases the whole citation was too long to be included but all dates, places and names are given. The names of the sponsors, witnesses and mother's maiden names were not indexed but always appear in the citation exactly as given in the original record. No names were left out. As in the old handwriting, some of it was difficult to read so three or more indexers studied any questionable names to insure as accurate a spelling as possible. In most cases alternate spellings of surnames are not listed together. All entries were checked at least three times. Therefore it is felt that this is an exceptionally accurate abstract of these most important records. The appreciation of the Rochester Genealogical Society goes to all its members who spent many hours organizing, indexing, typing, proofreading and putting it all together. Also our thanks to the churches involved for their help and encouragement. The name of the new church was "St Luke's - Genesee Falls" with Colonel Nathaniel Rochester named Senior Warden and Samuel Andrews, Junior Warden. The group continued to meet in the schoolhouse for the next three years until the first church was built. This first church building was a wooden structure, 38 x 46 feet containing 40 pews and was erected at a cost of $1460. Four years later the present church was built and the cornerstone was laid on the 11th of May 1824. The first worship service was held there on September 4th of the same year. St Luke's Episcopal Church has been strengthened and reconditioned several times and it is now the oldest public building in the city of Rochester.
