C O S T A N Z A F R A N C A V I L L A __________________________________________________ EXPLORING THETA WAVES an ambient live set with Binaural Beats & Modular Synths Born in Rome and based in Ibiza, Costanza Francavilla is an Italian composer and music producer. She combines the use of analog / modular synthesizers and sound manipulation mixing electronica with classical music, with an evocative and minimalist approach. Her sultry vocals and electronic dreamlike compositions fascinated Massive Attack member Tricky, with whom she collaborated for several years as a singer and co-producer. He would referred to her as 'the female version of me’ Throughout her carrier she's been performing with many acts in prestigious festivals and venues around the world including Royal Festival Hall, Glastonbury (UK), Sonar (ES), Montreaux Jazz Festival. She composes and produces music for movie trailers (such as “Blade Runner 2049”, “Counterpart, “Hunger Games” among others) and film. Her film-score credits include “Friedkin Uncut” about The Exorcist cult director William Friedkin starring Quentin Tarantino, Francis Ford Coppola, Wes Anderson, Damien Chazelle , (Nominee at Venice Film Festival), “S is For Stanley” about Stanley Kubrick (winner at Davide Di Donatello), “Free Men”about death-row inmate Kenneth Rems (presented at Festival of Human Rights). Since she moved to Ibiza in 2016 she’s been exploring ways of vibroacoustic & sound-wave therapies that include the use of meditation instruments such as Tibetan Singing Bowls, Crystals Pyramids, Hand Pans. Costanza’s ambient live set includes such instruments and her ethereal vocals combined with the use of modular synthesizers guiding the audience into a dreamlike-state through Binaural Beat stimulation in Theta brainwave frequencies. With the use of wireless headphones, Costanza’s live performance becomes an intimate sound-journey exploring the pulsating beat of Theta Waves, waves that are associated with deep relaxation, meditation, creativity and intuitive awareness. __________________________________________________ ABOUT BINAURAL BEATS & THETA WAVES A Binaural Beat is a frequency that is created by the brain after hearing two slightly different frequencies - measured in Hertz (Hz) - one of which is sent to the left ear and the other to the right ear. Upon hearing the two tones (frequencies) simultaneously on headphones, the brain then attempts to reconcile both tones, by creating a new third frequency, termed Binaural Beat, which is heard as a rhythmic pulsation (in this case created by Costanza thru Modular Synths Oscillators). For example, if a frequency of 200 Hz is played into your left ear, and a frequency of 205 Hz is played into your right ear, your brain “hears” a third frequency pulsing at 5 Hz, which is the difference between the two frequencies. Research has shown that when a person listens to Binaural Beats for a recommended time, their levels of arousal change and the effect varies according to the frequency pattern used. There are five known brain frequencies patterns - Gamma (Highest), Beta (High), Alpha (Moderate) ,Theta (Slow), Delta (Slowest) each associated with different benefits (see chart below). Theta Waves frequencies range between 4Hz to 7Hz (so a Slow frequency pulsation); therefore - for example - a 5 Hertz tone is in the Theta State, which is a state generally associated deep relaxation, meditation, creativity and heightened intuition. Theta Waves also play a roll in the early stages of sleep. There are numerous studies that show how Theta Waves positively impact our psychological well-being – think lower stress levels, clearer thinking, an enhanced creative mind and much more. In Costanza’s live performance Binaural Beats are laid underneath ambient sounds and dreamy ethereal melodies played with Modular Synths and vibroacoustics instruments : when the audience listens through headphones, the brain is encouraged to follow and produce more Theta Brainwaves and therefore to enter into a relaxing dream-state. !2 _____________________ TECHNICAL DETAILS INSTRUMENTATION The performance EXPLORING THETA WAVES by Costanza Francavilla is created by the use of modular synths and resonating vibroacoustic instruments (Tibetan singing bowls, Chrystal Pyramids, Hand-pans and/or similar). Costanza will bring her own instruments. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ AUDIENCE the ideal audience is between 30 and 100 people, preferably in supine position. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ WIRELESS HEADPHONE / OUTPUTS The performance takes place with the use of wireless headphones so the audience is able to hear the Binaural Beats stimulation and experience the brainwave entrainment. Costanza would provide herself up to 100 units of wireless headphones. The headphones receivers cover a distance of up to 300 meters radius. Costanza will send the audio signals from her audio-interface directly to the input of the Wireless headphones repeater. The repeater distributes the signals to the headphones. No additional Speaker System or in-house mixer is required. Venue needs to specify in advance how many headphones are needed (minimum 30, max 100 units) since the units need to be charged in advance. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ THE SPACE Since the performance takes place with the use of wireless headphones, the place of the event could be both an indoor venue or an outdoor space since there’s no need of a speaker system. An intimate space with use of cushions, yoga mats or relaxing sittings is recommended since the audience is encouraged to lay down during the performance to fully experience the brainwave entrainment sound- journey. Costanza can provide up to about 30 pareo to distribute in the venue for people to lay down. Please notify in advance if those are needed, or of the venue is already equipped with matts/pareos. Venue should possibly provide : 1) Cushions 2) yoga matts / or sitting fabric (like pareo, carpets etc) 3) Candles (at least 10) ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ BACKLINE Costanza provides for a portable table stand to mount her instruments. Backline required to be available at the venue: 1) Giraffe Microphone stand adjustable in height 2) Low-rise table (about 100cm x80cm wide, example: Ikea Lack table ) 3) Low-rise height-adjustable stool (like a drum stool or similar) !3 SOUND-CHECK At least 2 hours of set up is needed to mount the instruments, tune the oscillators, and test the headphones and sound.
