European Parliament & Benelux Parliament

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT COMMITTEE ON CITIZENS' FREEDOMS AND RIGHTS, JUSTICE AND HOME AFFAIRS & BENELUX PARLIAMENT COMMITTEE ON JUSTICE AND PUBLIC ORDER Monday, 28 May 2001, 3 - 6.30 p.m. Room PHS 3C50 Paul-Henri Spaak Building Rue Wiertz, B-1047 JOINT SEMINAR: PARLIAMENTARY SUPERVISION OF SCHENGEN Draft programme Following the integration into the EU Treaties of the Schengen acquis and the extension of Schengen to the Nordic countries, it is appropriate to examine the parliamentary control over Schengen in this changing environment. A further extension of Schengen will take place with the enlargement of the European Union to include the candidate countries. In this context much can be learned by the European Parliament from the experience of the Benelux Parliament in supervising the application of the Schengen rules. In view of the broad scope and complexity of the issues, the Joint Seminar's aim is to invite experts to give an overview of the issues and then to invite representatives of the European Parliament, the Benelux Parliament, the Nordic Council and the Baltic Assembly to make contributions and ask questions on the basis of experiences in their own countries on those issues which they consider to be most important. The experts can then reply to any questions from MEPs and other parliamentarians, in particular, the relevant rapporteurs (three-minutes per intervention). Members who wish to speak in the debates are asked to register with the secretariat for the speech of the expert concerned. Presentations by the external speakers listed in the programme should not exceed ten minutes and should preferably relate to a written contribution distributed at the hearing.
