Center of Excellence for Water Call for Undergraduate Curriculum Development The Center of Excellence for Water is a USAID funded project awarded to the American University in Cairo with the aim to create the Center of Excellence for Water at Alexandria University and in partnership with Egyptian Ministries and Governorates, US Universities (The American university in Cairo, Temple University, Utah State University, University of California at Santa Cruz and Washington State University), Egyptian Universities (Ain Shams University, Alexandria University, Aswan University, Beni Suef University and Zagazig University), Egyptian Research Centers, and Egyptian and US foundations and the private sector. The Center of Excellence for Water aims at improving the relevance and quality of water curricula and develop effective / innovative teaching methods for undergraduate, graduate and professionals of water engineering, while elevating water related research capacities and the ability to produce market-driven research products towards achieving the Egyptian Sustainable Development Strategy and Vision 2030 It is within this context of elevating water research capacities in Egypt, that the Center of Excellence for Water is pleased to announce the: “Call for Undergraduate Curriculum Development” Needs Assessment for Course Development Within the activities of Pillar II of the Center of Excellence for Water titled “Instructional Innovation and Curriculum Development”, the team of the project have conducted an extensive needs assessment campaign to identify the courses to be developed at the five Egyptian Partner Universities. The Needs Analysis campaign was led by Utah State University and consisted of online questionnaires for university professors, research centers, public and private sectors. In addition, the Needs assessment campaign included a 3-weeks field visit to all stakeholders in Egypt during the month of September 2019. Included in the results of the needs assessment process is a list of 15 undergraduate courses (in addition to two prerequisites courses) that are needed to be developed covering various topics in Water Science and Engineering, as follows: 1. Numerical Methods/Modeling (Prerequisite) 2. Environmental Management/Environmental Engineering Science (Prerequisite) 3. Water Chemistry and Microbiology 4. Water Quality Analysis 5. Lab and Field Measurements in Water Resources 6. Groundwater Hydrology 7. Environmental and Social Impact Assessment in Water Engineering Projects 8. Groundwater Quality Modelling 9. Geographic Information Systems in Water Engineering 10. Climate Change Adaptation in Water Resources 11. Sustainable Water Resources Management Strategies in Egypt Center of Excellence for Water (CoE-CFCD-FY20-01) Page 2/8 Center of Excellence for Water 12. Desalination 13. Application of Remote Sensing in Water Resources 14. Wastewater Treatment for Reuse 15. Non-Conventional Water Resources 16. Application of Renewable Energy in Water Resources 17. Data Acquisition, Preprocessing and Modelling Call for Curriculum Development Teams To develop the above-mentioned courses, the Centre of Excellence for Water is launching this call for curriculum development teams within the following constraints: • Each team should have one member from a US-Partner University (The American university in Cairo, Temple University, Utah State University, University of California at Santa Cruz and Washington State University); at least one member from one of the Egyptian Partner Universities (Ain Shams University, Alexandria University, Aswan University, Beni Suef University and Zagazig University); and a third member from any partner of the consortium (i.e. Egyptian Partner Universities, Research Centers, Ministries, Governorates, and Private Sector) • At least one of the Egyptian members of the team should be coming from a Faculty of Engineering • Course development teams are encouraged to have diversified team members (young faculty, female, faculty with special needs, etc.) while guaranteeing academic excellence • The application for a course development should be submitted by a member of the team on behalf of the whole team • Course development teams may participate in the development of more than one course (with multiple proposal documents) • Members of the development team should satisfy the following criteria: o Have a minimum of 3 years of teaching experience in a relevant course subject area o Have good technical English language skills o Have previous experience in developing courses o Be willing to work in a collaborative environment (demonstrated through past industrial links, research teams, previous projects, course development/teaching collaborations…etc.) Application Procedure By the specified deadline, each team is expected to submit a document stating the following: • Description and composition of the course development team • Statement of the team’s vision for the proposed course • Letter of Commitment from the team members (stating the willingness to devote the necessary time to develop the proposed course and are committed to collaborate to fulfill the e-development requirements) • CVs of the team • Timeline for the course development phases (six months at most) Once a team is selected to develop a specific course, a mandate will be issued from the Center of Excellence for Water stating the acceptance of the team composition and work, while detailing all administrative and financial aspects of the course development. Center of Excellence for Water (CoE-CFCD-FY20-01) Page 3/8 Center of Excellence for Water It is planned that for each course, a total of 360 hours (45 man/day) will be spent on each course for the whole Egyptian team of the development. Days are compensated following the STDF compensation rates for Egyptian Professors (680 EGP per day). Final Course Deliverables: Each developed course should follow the Center of Excellence for Water’s Course Development guidelines https://bit.ly/3fpnQBe and shall include: • 15 weeks of instructional materials ready for integration into the CoE LMS system • Complete course specification (Center of Excellence for Water’s Course Specification Template, available at https://bit.ly/3b8bMRi to be developed no later than one month after the start of the course development • Lectures: 15 weeks of lectures or seminars in the form of slideshow presentations, 1 hour/week for 15 weeks per credit hour as shown in the Center of Excellence for Water’s Course Template https://bit.ly/2SEj0pP • Laboratory assignments/activities/lectures as appropriate (2 hours laboratory work/week for 15 weeks per credit hour) • Field work assignments/activities/lectures as appropriate (3 to 4 hours of field work or field trips/week for 15 weeks per credit hour) • Associated homework assignments and solutions, project assignments and grading rubrics, chat rooms and digital space for project-based courses • Associated quizzes, exams and solutions • Associated reading materials, required texts, videos, reference material, tutorials, etc., necessary for student learning • Any other teaching and student performance assessment materials relevant to the course as proposed by the Course Development Team. • It is expected that the course development team will report on a bimonthly basis (every two months) the progress to the Curriculum Development Committee of the Center of Excellence for Water, including a brief progress report. Title of Property, Ownership and Intellectual Property • AUC and the development team agree that ownership and other rights to intellectual property made, created, developed or first reduced to practice in the performance of any task as per the mandates of the course development team shall be determined in accordance with United States patent laws, United States copyright laws, and other United States intellectual property laws • All information, documents, software, reports, data, records, forms and other materials developed solely by a party in the course of performing any task as per the mandates of the course development team shall be owned by such party. All information, documents, software, reports, data, records, forms and other materials developed jointly by the parties in the course of performing any Task as per a research project shall be owned jointly by the Parties. • The United States Government reserves a royalty-free, non-exclusive, and irrevocable right to reproduce, publish, or otherwise use the work for Federal purposes and to authorize others to do so. • It is understood that, while guaranteeing the intellectual property of the course development teams, courses developed under the Center of Excellence for Water could be Center of Excellence for Water (CoE-CFCD-FY20-01) Page 4/8 Center of Excellence for Water reproduced, re published and re taught at other educational institutions whenever it deems necessary. • Courses developed within the framework of the Center of Excellence for water should be labeled and certified by the Center Course Development Guidelines The following table shows the 17 courses with their proposed composition (number of credit hours and the recommended distribution
