Not a name readily thrown around in Rolls-Royce and Bentley circles, however as one of the famed coachbuilders on many exotic cars over the decades, Zagato did in fact produce 9 special order Bentley Continental GTZ’s for customers who obviously had an appeal for their signature designs which included a bubble styled roof line and deep grill treatment. One such example is owned by Rolls-Royce and Bentley enthusiast Jack Henley from the United Kingdom. I met Jack a couple of years ago in Sydney when he was touring Australia. He was introduced to me by Keith Wherry, a past Federal President of the RROCA and very good friend. Jack told me he had quite a collection of Bentley and Rolls-Royce motor cars at his home in Kent and that I should come and visit him there. I was hopeful that one day I would and get the opportunity to see his considerable collection. I am yet to get to Kent, though I did though catch up with Jack in Marlow, about an hour or so outside London where he keeps a home on the banks of the river Thames and then again at Blenheim Palace where he displayed his 2008 Bentley GTZ. His example took nearly two years to create from a donor GT Speed (brand new) and, wait for it, ultimately at a cost of approximately £700,000! It’s sometimes described by people as, in local colloquialism, a Marmite car, because you either love or hate it. The Camargue suffered similarly from this public response on its debut, years later the Camargue finds favour with more people that it originally did, maybe Jack’s GTZ will also appreciate the same growth in appreciation in the years to come. Happy motoring and may many more wonderful stories come forward.
