ADM 26 Pay allotments He was in the navy c. 1795- 1815 but I don't know the ship? Tracing a sailor/rating in the navy of this period is extremely difficult if you don't know a ship he served on - officers are a different case. The 1795 Navy Act , included here at end of ADM26,- set up a mechanism whereby sailors -not officers- could send part of their pay home - usually family member. The registers of ADM 26 then provide the following information. 1.Sailors name and ship serving on 2. Who was to receive the pay and relationship. 3. Address of the recipient. 4. Where they collected the pay from. - here there a few abbreviations e.g C, Dundee = Customs Dundee E, Bristol =Excise Bristol Ch, Portsmouth = Cheque Portsmouth Treasurer - these last two are unclear as to process of payment DD after an entry stands for Discharged Dead. This very much a work in progress - therefore some fields will be blank. If you find that you require information on these fields let me know as it's possible that I have the data and it's yet to be processed. The period covered in this sample runs from 1795-1813 however it should be noted that this is by no stretch of the imagination complete. It should also be noted that this covers sailors only - NOT officers So what would you do with this information? This should give enough information for a man to be found in the ship's muster roll and from there their career can be traced. I have come across a few rare cases of women appearing in ADM 26 - usually on a hospital ship but not always - they do not as far as I can find appear in the muster roll - I you do wind one I'd be delighted to know.
