He entered medical school but left when his father died in 1791. From 1792-1794 Harrison was Anthony Wayne's aide-de-camp in battles against the Miami Indians and was promoted to captain in 1797. Harrison was appointed secretary of the Northwest Territory on June 26, 1798, and in 1799 was elected a territorial delegate to Congress, where he served until May 1800, at which time he was appointed governor of the Indiana Territory. Harrison served as territorial governor for twelve years and had the duties of securing justice for the Indians as well as acquiring their land. During his governorship his military career was enhanced when he defeated the Prophet at Tippecanoe in 1811. In the fall of 1812 he was named commander of the Army of the Northwest, and he resigned as governor a few months later. Under Harrison's leadership, the Americans were able to defeat the British at the Battle of the Thames in 1813. Harrison served a representative to Congress from Ohio from 1816-1819, and was elected to one term in the Ohio legislature in 1819. In 1825 he was elected to the U.S. Senate from Ohio and served as minister to Columbia. Harrison ran for President on the Whig ticket in 1836 but was defeated by Martin Van Buren. Capitalizing on his war record and his western ties, Harrison returned four years later to become the ninth President of the United States. Harrison died from pneumonia one month after assuming the office; his was the shortest of any President's term. Sources: Original Collection Guide SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The collection consists primarily of letters and documents written by Harrison during the period 1794-1840. Included are his letters to the U.S. secretaries of war discussing Indian relations, treaty negotiations, and military affairs during the War of 1812; his War of 1812 letters to Governor Return Jonathan Meigs of Ohio and Governor Isaac Shelby of Kentucky (1812-1814); other correspondence regarding military operations against the Indians (1811) and during the War of 1812. correspondence regarding Northwest Territory and Indiana Territory Politics, including his letters to Thomas Worthington of Ohio (1790s-1810s); papers regarding the administration of the Indiana Territory, including appointments, petitions, and acts of the territorial legislature; receipts, provisions returns, and other military documents from Greenville and Fort Washington (1794-1797); correspondence regarding Ohio and national politics (1820s-1840); correspondence regarding family matters and his personal business interest including several letters written by his wife, Anna; and papers relating to Harrison's illness and death. Most of the items in the collection have been obtained on an individual basis by either donation or purchase dating from the 1930s. Many were originally part of the Arthur G. Mitten collection, but were separated from it at an early date. This is an active collection and appropriate new items are being added as they become available for acquisition. Items are generally arranged in chronological order except those to Worthington, Meigs, and Charles Hammond, which are grouped by individual. Because of the constantly changing size of the collection, an item calendar rather than a box and folder inventory is given. Items must be requested and viewed on an individual basis.
