A Bride’s Story ■ Set in Central Asia in the late 19th C. ■ Follows a series of women and their circumstances – husbands, families, etc. ■ Strikes a fine balance in mood and information ■ 9 Volumes released so far by Yen Press ■ Hardback Physical volumes ■ Recent digital release Emma: A Victorian Romance ■ Mori’s previous work, based upon rampant Anglophilism ■ Meticulously researched, hired a historical consultant ■ Melodramatic romance story ■ At times naive and/or predictable ■ But very adorable ■ Rescued by Yen press, available in 3 hardbacks ■ Also available digitally later this month Anything and Something ■ An anthology of Mori’s other short works ■ Available physically in hardback ■ Also available digitally ■ This is not strictly a historical manga ■ An excuse for the next slide INTERMISSION END OF INTERMISSION Showa ■ Historical journey and examination from 1926 until 1989 ■ Written by Kitaro Author Shigeru Mizuki ■ Balance of personal stories, Historical events, comedy, humour, humanism ■ Physical-only, 4 massive paperbacks ■ No seriously, they are huge ■ Drawn and Quarterly release (boo) YOSHIHIRO TATSUMI Yoshihiro Tatsumi ■ This is kind of a cheating addition ■ Works were written contemporaneously but are an amazing window into that time ■ Passive detail ■ Father of “Gekiga” ■ Drawn and Quarterly physical-only releases ■ “A Drifting Life” is an amazing historical work, both for manga and for the time itself.
