LIFE MEMBERS (WOMEN) Mesdames R Martin, T McDonald, P Quickenden, P Carrick PRESIDENTS REPORT It is my pleasure to present the 125th Annual report to the members of the Sydenham Cricket Club. This has been a year where again we have seen our season cut short. This time it was because of a virus which has now become a world pandemic and as a consequence change the way the world operates. As well as closing our season early it prevented us celebrating our season with our team and Individual achievement awards. We hope that the can acknowledge those recipients in person at a function during the current season. Regrettable also we have had to postpone our 125 year celebrations scheduled for show week end this year. Whilst we now know that travel restrictions have eased in New Zealand, we also know that International travel is not possible at this time and so our 125 year committee in consultation with the club committee decided it was best to postpone the celebrations until next year. More on that will be advised as our season gets underway. The pandemic has affected us all, both in family and work life, but also it has had a profound effect on all sporting endeavours in New Zealand…and cricket has not escaped that. Your committee (and in particular the Covid subcommittee ) has spent a very busy winter trying to understand how our season, recently concluded, will end up financially and then trying to prepare a budget for the upcoming season, which can provide all levels of cricketers an enjoyable season, but also to continue the coaching and development momentum we have started with our Premier teams and up and coming players. As you will see, our early season finish and subsequent loss of income has resulted in a loss for the season year ending June 30th. This trading loss was also not helped by having to make major repairs to our roller costing approximately $7000. Fortunately your committee had “rainy day reserves” and whilst the loss is regrettable, we are able to open the season being able to meet early season costs such as pre season coaching and ground and block preparations. This season will be tough financially. There is no doubt about that. We know already that our grants from gambling trusts will be severely reduced, for obvious economic reasons, and our other sponsors will be similarly constrained. However we are determined to try and delivery to our membership quality cricket blocks, good playing gear, and quality coaching to those who aspire to higher cricket honours. At this point I must acknowledge the support of Christchurch Metro Cricket who generously refunded all clubs with last years affiliation fees and offered our youth teams support by way of vouchers for gear to be redeemed from cricket Express during the upcoming season. During the winter your committee have also been working on player recruitment initiatives. At the time of writing we have new players intending to join us for both and Premier women and premier men's teams, but until the paperwork is complete we cannot yet announce those players to you. What we do know is that in the men's competition we have sufficient numbers and playing strength to enter teams in Premier, Championship, Division one and Division two. These four morning grade entries demonstrate real playing numbers of quality cricketers and we are determined to keep that growth momentum going in the seasons ahead. At the time of going to press with this report it is planned that all morning grade cricket (including Prem women's ) will start their competition on October 3rd and all other grades will start on October 17th. This delay is due to ground shortages due to winter codes playing longer as a result of their delayed start. As always we are deeply indebted and appreciative of the support we receive from our community funding agencies. Yet again we have a group who work hard and are very committed to the future prosperity of our club. Again I am pleased to report that all have offered their services again for the coming year, and I think that speaks volumes for the ongoing success of our club. However as I have said before, do not let that dissuade any of you from putting your name forward. We have much to do and if you have some time to give please do not hesitate to put your name forward! So, on behalf of your committee it is my pleasure to present to you the 125th Annual report and Financial Statement for your consideration. Graham Harris President CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT Well unfortunately the season came to an abrupt end with the Coronavirus outbreak and as a result we lost the last two weeks of the season and had to cancel the prize giving. Hopefully we will look to have a prizegiving function early in the new season. On a positive note our Div 1 men's team had a successful season winning both the 1 day and T20 competitions, and finishing 3rd in the 2 day competition. The combined points were enough for them to gain promotion to the Championship grade next season. Having a Premier, Championship and a Div 1 sides this coming season will create a great pathway for players (especially youth) to attain higher honours. The Premier women made it to the final of their T20 competition only to lose the final to St Albans. The Div 8 Tamils also had a convincing season winning their grade after leading all season. And the Div 7 Allstars and President Cardinals finished third in their grades. The Youth Women finished third in there T20 competition. The social scene certainly picked up as the season progressed. The quiz had slightly better numbers in February. The bar continued to do well with good turnouts on most Saturday nights, even to the extent where we had a regular group staying until closing time at 10pm when they had to be kicked out!!. And I would like to commend everyone on the way they conducted themselves in the clubrooms especially when the bar was open which made my job running the bar a whole lot easier. And thanks to those that helped out on the bar when I wasn't there. As a result of the cancellation of the prize giving, many will be wondering who won what. Well all was revealed with a full list of winners in this annual report - congratulations to all the winners as there were a lot of outstanding achievements throughout the season. And congratulations to Jenna Waghorn who won the Felton Trophy for most Premier women wickets this season with the Metro Cricket Awards. She has now won this trophy four times in the last five years. Also well done to those players that made representative teams during the season. A big thanks to all the captains for their hard work over the season supporting the club, from getting teams on the field, supporting social events, and to ensuring club stats were kept up to date. Also thanks to the committee and helpers for all their hard work over the season. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to keep the club up and running especially with the size of our club. Andrew Chisnall Club Captain OBITUARIES It is with great sadness that the club announces the passing of Bill "WA" Thomson. Bill was a stalwart of the club, playing from 1960 until 2004, including playing in the Premier team from 1961 until 1984. Bill was made a Life Member in 1992 for his services to the club. Bill's batting was legendary, with 14,916 runs for the club, second on the all-time list behind Ritchie Thomas.
