Catalog Number: This series contains memoranda, correspondence, SB-1A, 1B, 1C, 1D minutes and bound minute books, competition score cards and lists of results, sample mailings, Inclusive Dates: entry blanks, financial reports, clippings, lists of 1926-1979 Presidents (1941-66), membership lists, newsletters, and rules and by-laws. The arrangement is by subject with the exception of box SB-1D, which is arranged chronologically. This series appears to have been maintained by the Sno Birds administration throughout its history, and appears to be complete. General Note: Access Restrictions: Last Updated: 2002 /09 3 Lake Placid Collection Guide Public Library Collections Sno Birds Lake Placid Club Archives Agency History/Biographical Note: “The Sno Birds are an intra-Club body of the Lake Placid Club formally recognized as such under Club Bylaws...Enrollment is limited to Club members and resident Club guests.” (procedure notice to employees from George C. Carroll, as Secretary of Sno Birds, SB-1A, folder “Sno Birds Information”.) The Sno Birds were one of the most famous winter sports groups in America. The group was organized in 1920 to encourage participation in winter sports among members and guests of Lake placid Club. The Sno Birds became a leading force in the nationwide development of recreational and competitive winter sports. The Sno Birds (with the efforts of Godfrey Dewey) took the lead in bringing the 1932 Winter Olympic Games to Lake Placid. Whitney Ski Development Certificates, plans for development and renovations. The series is a thorough account of the operational history of Mt. Whitney. The ski reports include snowfall and weather conditions (some early). There is some early material on skis and the development of skiing and ski areas. They also include correspondence re membership in Ski Club (some Lowell Thomas correspondence). There is one early clipping (1948) from the New York Times.
