The Attorney General carries out this constitutional responsib ility through the programs of the Department of Jus tice. The Attorney General’s specific charges are threefold: to provide legal representation, to support common law e nforcement, and to protect consumers and the environment. The Attorney General represents the People of California before trial, appellate and supreme co urts of California and the United States in criminal and civil matters; serves as legal counsel to s tate officers, boards, commissions and departments; EDMUND G. BROWN JR. and assists district attorneys in the administration of ATTORNEY GENERAL justice. To support California’s local law enforcem ent community, the Attorney General coordinat es statewide narcotics enforcement efforts, participates in criminal investigation s, and provides identification and information services and telecommunication support. In addition, the Attorney General establishes and operates projects and programs that protect Californians from fraudulent, unfair and ill egal activities that victimize consumers or threaten public safety, and enforces the laws that
