Compiled By Kali Weaver Grand Historian 2007-2009 Artwork By Daniel Welch The Noteworthy Events of Kappa Psi Central Office Moves The new Central Office opened in Weatherford, Oklahoma on July 5, 2000. Brother Scott Long greeted the arrival of the moving van from Oklahoma City this past June with looks of relief. It had finally arrived and he was ready to begin the process of unpacking, setting up, rearranging, and finding all of the lost things. Executive Director Magarian and the entire staff helped in the process, from packing up and shipping, to helping Dr. Long unpack and set up. Dr. Magarian and Charmaine spent several days with new Executive Director Long and his new staff explaining and leading them through the long task of getting ready for that first official phone call and function. All in all it was a process that went rather smoothly and The Central Office is now up and running. Congratulations to new Executive Director Long and his staff and good luck in the future. Central Office 2008 Away We Go By Johnny W. Porter, Executive Director It was early morning on October 1 when the moving van pulled up to the new office location. I looked out in amazement as the movers opened the van doors and I saw all of the stuff that had to be unloaded and sorted. I rolled up my sleeves and began the process. It took four movers and little old me five hours to unload the van and get things located in the proper rooms, or at least I thought the proper rooms. I have been a member of Kappa Psi since 1971 and I felt a huge surge of pride as the van was unloaded. I have always had a lot of respect for the executive director but never realized the amount of work, time, and dedication that was required. I opened boxnes and cases and saw things that I knew would be used shortly and saw things that I wondered if I would ever learn how to operate or use properly. I spent 12 hours that day in total amazement at the enormity of the job ahead. The next day, Wendy Flores, the Fraternity’s new administrative assistant, arrived for her first day of work. She too was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of things we had to do in a relatively short period of time. She dived right in and soon had the new office organized and set up and ready to begin work. Wendy Flores, Office Manager, was quickly organized and the Central Office is open for business at 2060 North Collins, Suite 128, Richardson, TX 75080 We had no idea what to do but that soon changed as orders came in, supply requests arrived, and the phone began to ring all on the first day before we could even open all the crates. We just jumped right in. So since the first few days, both of us have been learning what it means to be the “Central Office.” I know it has been a bit rough the first few months for all of us, but as time moves on, all things will get smoother. By this time next year, many Province meetings and the GCC will have come and gone and the newness of the Texas transition will be long forgotten. I hope that I can only live up to the expectations that I have for myself and give you the service that you expect. It will be my pleasure to serve as your executive director. Thank you for the opportunity. Three brothers to Honorary Offices Summer 1995 The Executive Committee of Kappa Psi has appointed three Brothers to Honorary offices. They are William R. Smith -- Grand Counselor Emeritus, Dr. Dewey D. Garner -- Grand Historian Emeritus, and Dr. Anthony Palmieri II -- Editor of THE MASK Emeritus. The three Brothers join two other brothers holding honorary offices. They are Richard M. Doughty -- Grand Ritualist Emeritus and Nicholas W. Fenney -- Editor of THE MASK Emeritus. Dr. Dewey D. Garner Grand Historian Emeritus Despite belief to the contrary, Brother Dewey Garner was not born a Brother. Nor is it true that he knew F. Harvey Smith on a personal basis although he may have known a friend or two who did. Dr. Garner was initiated into the Beta Rho Chapter of Kappa Psi on April 4, 1962. His educational background includes a B.S. in Pharmacy (1964) and a Ph.D. in Pharmacy Administration (1970) from the University of Mississippi. Dr. Garner was an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Administration at the University of Houston before returning to the University of Mississippi to assume similar responsibilities in 1971. Only July 1, 1992 he was appointed Chair of the Department. Dr. Garner became Grand Council Deputy for he Beta Rho Chapter in 1972 and thus began his remarkable contributions to the Fraternity. Between the years of 1972 and 1993 he served a total of 20 years on the Executive Committee including two terms as Grand Regent. During his last two years as Grand Historian (1991-1993) he completed the book entitled: The History of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity. Dr. Garner has also served as President of the Professional Fraternity Association, Vice President of the National Interfraternity Foundation, and Vice President of the Center for the Study of the College Fraternity. Brother Garner lives in Oxford, Mississippi with his wife of 31 years, Barbara, and his 16 year old son, Chris. He has an older son, Derry, and two grandchildren, Michael and Molly Jane. William R. Smith Grand Counselor Emeritus Brother Bill, a 1962 initiate of Mu Omicron Pi Chapter, served a total of 17 years on the Executive Committee between 1976 and 1993, holding the offices of: Graduate Member- at-Large, Grand Counselor, Grand Vice Regent, Grand Regent, and Immediate Past Grand Regent. Brother Bill held the office of Grand Counselor (1979-1987) longer than any Brother in the history of the Fraternity. It was during this tenure that the Constitution, By-Laws and Uniform chapter and Province By-Laws were revised and indexed into their now familiar format. It was also during that time that the Fraternity’s 1903 articles of incorporation were revised to allow the fraternity to seek tax-exempt status and established a tax-exempt foundation. During his term as Grand Vice Regent, Brother Bill began the compilation of the current Policy Manual. During his term as Grand Regent the fraternity obtained its first complete set of ritual regalia and provided the Ritual Demonstration Tape used at Province Assemblies and Grand Council Conventions. Dr. Tony Palmieri Editor of THE MASK Emeritus Brother Anthony Palmieri has been a Brother since 1969. An initiate of Beta Epsilon Chapter, he considers himself lucky to have been shepherded by such Brothers as George Osborne, Heber Younken, and Norm Campbell. Palmieri started his service to Kappa Psi as treasurer of Beta Epsilon and was instrumental in reactivation of the Providence Graduate Chapter in the early 1970s. Brothers Campbell, Youngken, and Osbourne instilled in Toy two basic tenets that guide him still. First, Kappa Psi is for life and is much bigger than the local chapter. Secondly, learning never stops... ever. Embracing these two ideas, Palmieri was a Professor of Pharmacy at the University of Wyoming prior to joining Upjohn. He has served in every office of the College Fraternity Editors Association, including President. He has been on all of the APhA policy committees, Chairman of the Basic Sciences Section of APRS and has also served as President of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He has recently finished being the US Chairman for the Handbook of Pharmaceutical Excipients, a major publication of APhA. The highlight of Palmieri’s service to Kappa Psi has been the 15 year editorship of THE MASK of Kappa Psi. Many innovations in design and content occurred during Palmieri’s leadership as editor, the most noticeable being the expansion of the magazine, layout design, and creative covers. Working with the various Grand Regents are among his most fond memories during those years. He will be eternally grateful for the faith then Grand Regent Garner placed in him when he appointed him editor. Palmieri has broad professional interests including dissolution, patents, history of pharmacy and fraternalism in its broadest sense. Presently, he is manager of Intellectual Property at the Upjohn Company and serves on a variety of national committees as well as being an Adjunct Professor of Pharmacy at Creighton University. Changing of the Guard at the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Foundation, Inc. 1992-2004 By Norman A. Campbell, J.D., Ph.D., R.Ph. Past Grand Regent 1972-1974 Past President, Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Foundation, Inc. 1992-2004 I still can recall vividly the telephone call from the late Brother William R. Smith during his term as Grand Regent. It was on a summer afternoon during the summer of 1990 while I was a relief pharmacist in a community pharmacy. He asked if I could take on the task of “creating a foundation” to generate funds which could be used to support Brothers in meeting their educational expenses. As a pharmacist-lawyer employed in academia, I learned a number of skills via the pro bono route, so I approached this task as a “learning experience” as well. By 1992 the constitution and by-laws were adopted and the first officers and board of directors were in place. On February 16, 1993, the Foundation was officially incorporated. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) subsequently granted Section 501(c) (3) status and we began our quest for contributions and initial distribution of scholarships.
