Hit Songs Deconstructed Deconstructing Today's Hits for Songwriting Success http://reports.hitsongsdeconstructed.com Pop Chart Wire: Week of November 26th [TABLE=121] Note: * denotes a new addition to the top 5 Changes from last week’s chart: Gym Class Heroes featuring Adam Levine remain at #1 for a third week in a row with “Stereo Hearts.” David Guetta climbs two spots, landing at #2 with “Without You.” Adele drops one spot, landing at #3 with “Someone Like You.” Cobra Starship climbs one spot to land at #4 with “You Make Me Feel.” Maroon 5 drops two spots, landing at #5 with “Moves Like Jagger.” New Arrivals To The Top 5: None Deconstruction: Once again we have a mixed bag of sub-genre influences in the top 5, including dance, funk, hip hop, soul and alt rock. One song (“Stereo Hearts”) starts immediately with the chorus. The others begin with the verse (after the intro). Only one song, (“Moves Like Jagger”), follows a straight-up A-B-A-B-C-B form. “Stereo Hearts” follows the form as well, except for the fact that it kicks off with the chorus. Two out five songs feature a male lead vocalist, one features a female lead (“Someone Like You”) and two feature a duet (“Moves Like Jagger” and “You Make Me Feel”). Regarding when first choruses occur, one song kicks right off with the chorus (“Stereo Hearts”) one occurs quite far into the song (“Without You” – 36% of the way into the song), and the rest occur around one quarter of the way into the song. Primary instrumentation varies from song to song, though four out of five songs (with the exception of “Someone Like You,” which features piano) features a synth and electric guitar at some point in the mix. Four out of five songs contain “proper” intro’s. Of the four songs that contain “proper” intro’s all of them land at 0:15 (what are the odds of that!) Only one song, “Moves Like Jagger,” contains a “proper” outro section (though it’s exceptionally short in length and barely qualifies as an outro). All of the other songs in the top 5 end on the chorus, except for “Without You,” which ends on the verse. Four out of five songs contain a bridge, all of which occur after a chorus.
