PIcasso’s painting “Bouquet of Peace” looks like a perfect project for your child to make and then send to the residents and staff of Mt. Pleasant. Pablo Picasso was born October 25, 1881 in Andalucia, Spain. ​ His father was an artist and art teacher so Picasso was brought up doing lots of artwork. They even say when he was a baby that his first word was “piz”. It is short for “lapis” , the ​ Spanish word for pencil. When Picasso was seven years old his father decided to teach him art. His father saw that he was a great artist and thought he was a better artist than him! Picasso painted this when he was seven years old. When Picasso was 13 he went to the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona where his father ​ ​ taught. Science and Charity, Painted at the age of 15 First Communion, 1896 painted at the age of 14! This is his sister Lola. “Portrait of the Artist’s Mother,” 1896 painted at the age of 14 Picasso experimented with different ways to make art. He kept changing his mind! Here are some of his paintings. Mother and Child (1901) During this time he painted lots of paintings that were blue. They called this period in his life the “Blue Period”. He was sad during this time. His best friend had died. Acrobat and Young Harlequin (1905) During this time he was happier so they called this time in his art the”Rose” period. Here he painted many paintings that were reddish. Many people think he was happier because he had fallen in love! Picasso continued to make art until he died in 1973 at the age of 91! He was always experimenting how to make and show art in different ways. Look below at all the different paintings and sculptures he made during his lifetime. He made over 50,000 pieces of art! Remember Picasso was always experimenting on ways to paint things differently. In this painting he wanted to paint the front and sides of his friend’s head all on the same head. This period was called his “Surrealist” period. Self Portrait 1907 Three Musicians 1921 Bull’s Head Can you tell what he used to make this sculpture? Did you guess a bicycle seat and handlebars? These are ceramics (or pots and vases) he made out of clay. Today boys and girls you are going to make a drawing of Picasso’s “Bouquet of Peace”. This was the time he was making art where he wanted to make things simple. You can tell by looking at his painting that there isn’t much detail right? Do his flowers look real?
