Queen Alexandra was delighted with the marvellous reproductions of the "Grand" supplied to her. BY APPOINTMENT TO H. M. QUEEN ALEXANDRA 10-inch, 3s. 6d. ; 12-inch, 5s. 6d. BANDS. The Band of H.M. Coldstream Guards. (Conducted by Lieut. Mackenzie Rogan, M.V.O.) 12-inch records, 5s. 6d. 0213 The Coon's Patrol LOTTER It seems difficult to hit upon a new melody of this simple character, but this has here been done, and the result is a humorous march-past given with the quaint effects which belong to negro minstrelsy. Like all pieces of the "patrol " type, et shows an effective dying away at the conclusion. (Steed 8r.) 0214 The March of the Giants FINCK The opening of this with its heavy lumbering gait is not unsuegestive of the giants Fafnir and Fasolt in " Rhinegold." The slow march proper, which follows, is undoubtedly quaint, and very clear in rhythm and execution. (Speed Si.) 10-inch record, 3s. 6d. G c. 2-455 Trafalgar March ZEIsLB Full of the joy of life, and has the effect of making one wish to march to its own brisk time. (Steed Si.) What 'sore suitable Christmas bresent than a Gramojihtiire and a fezu records of your favourite singers ? BANDS-continued.The Black Diamonds. 12-inch record. 5s. 6d. 0212 Hunting Scene BUCALOSSI There is little more effective on the Gramophone than a well carried out novelty of this description. After the hymn-like introduction suggestive of morning we have the yelping of dogs and the well-known chorus "A- hunting we will go." There is a rousing gallop, plentiful "Hullo's," and an exciting finish, the whole being most realistic and amusing. (.Sfteed 8r.) The Metropolitan Orchestra. 12-inch records, 5s. 6d. Bells of Dawn by A very good waltz this excellent band, replete with bright effects of clever orchestration. The fine style is in which this is given at times suggestive of the Sousa Orchestra. One may note that one of the numbers is a gem of engaging melody, and the record. ing is on a very high level. (Steed 81.) 0599 Phantom Brigade MYDDLETON The Metropolitan Orchestra certainly possesses an individuality of its own, and undeniable merit, this being shown in an "intense" style of performance, both as regards the solo instruments and the players in general. "The Phantom Brigade" is a piece of entr'acte music, the recording being specially good, this obtaining a soft rich tone of unusually pleasing quality. (Speed 8a.) Bohemian Orchestra. 12-inch record, 5a. 6d. 0598 Gems from " Our Miss Gibbs ° CARYLL AND MONCKTON The idea of utilising a chorus with instrumental selection is again happily carried out. This forms an immense improvement upon the ordinary selection, and gives an actual idea of the songs as they sound when sung. Among the choruses given here, two are specially well done, "Mary" and the nonsense rhyme " Yip-IAddy." A record that is all sweetness and gaiety. (Speed Be.) Mr. John Harrison (Tenor). 12-inch record, 53. 6d. 02213 The Ribbon, The Ring and the Rose WILLEBY Reveals Mr. John Harrison in his very best vein, The title is suggestive of a romantic song, as indeed this proves to be. It contains a variety of charming effects, both of tore and expression, and these are rendered in a most artistic manner and with fine vocal quality. Especially commendable is the soft high note at the finish. (S,seed 8z.) Pubashei by John Church Co. 10-inch record, 3s. 6d. 4-2045 C'. C. I dreamt of you JULEFF A very light and dainty love song which attracts by its tripping tunefulness. Again we note the excellent vocal quality and artistic phrasing of the song, and that gift of style which is not the least charm of Mr. Harrison's singing. (Spe, d Bt.) Pubei.hed by Vincent Anusic Co. Robert Radford (Bass). ,Mr. 10-inch record. 3s. 6d. G. C. 4-2046 Hearts of Oak A patriotic song of the old-fashioned type, it belongs to a time when a considerable amount of fighting was being done, and contains very much more "go" than the modern drawing-room song of the soldier or the sailor. Radford's immense voice and vigorous style could hardly be heard to better effect than in this song, which make an impressively powerful and good-toned record. (Speed So.) Published by Boosey t' Co. A fine rendering, such as this, is needful to show the possibilities of so magnificent an example of English song. (Speed 8o.) Published by Joseph Williams. Madame Jones-Hudson (Soprano). 10-inch record, 35. 6d. G.c. 3838 Arioso DELIBES The composer of the well-known ballets " Sylvia " and " Coppelia" is responsible for this striking little song, in which we note a combination of sustained melody and dramatic feeling not often found together ; the whole song being unified, also, by a short motive which in in runs right through and is heard now the voice, now the accompaniment. The sterling qualities of Madame Jones-Hudson as a singer are fully exemplified here in the pristine clearness of voice and the undeniable artistic temperament. This is a record to be played again and again. (Speed 8a.) Pul-lisbed by Schirmer 6° Co. DUET. Miss Perceval Allen and Mr. John Harrison. 12-inch record, 5s. 6d. Lass 04052 It was a Lover and his WALTHEW There is certainly nothing doleful about Walthew's fine duet-its brightness and animation are exceptional. Miss Perceval Allen's voice rings out with beautiful clearness and purity, and the accent and rhythm of the performance are excellent. The singing of this clever duet must be pronounced an emphatic success. (Speed 8.)Published by Joseph Williams. I 2-inch record, 5s. 6d. 04051 When the budding bloom SULLIVAN From the first act of " Haddon Hall," which, it will be remembered, Sullivan wrote in corjunction with Mr. Sidney Grundy. The English composer was a master of tune, as is well shown in this number, which contains much for solo voices, each singer having a good lead to sing, a sonorous ensemble denoting the conclusion. (Speed 8o.) Published by Chappell & Co. HUMOROUS. Mr. Harry Lauder. 12-inch record, 5s. 6d. 02212 The Bounding Bounder In this song the Gaelic comedian foregathers with Lieut. Shackleton and discusses with him, over a glass, the discovery of the South Pole, and other kss frigid and Antarctic matters, in cheerful fashion. There is the is usual good chorus and patter, and the song novel and up-to-date. (Speed 8t.) Published bi, Francis, Day & Hunter. Mr. Arthur Gilbert. 12-inch record, 5s. 6d. 02204 John Bull's Budget Song It is in this song in which Fragson has been making such a" hit" in his recent performances. Asa political song it may be considered a quite superior example. The tune has done duty for the same purpose many times before ; the case is forcibly put, the words are very clear and distinct, and the chorus well sung. While its full appreciation must depend somewhat upon the standpoint of the listener, it is undoubtedly in good taste and its humour should be appreciated by both parties. (Speed 8o.) Published by Van Tilaer Publishing Co. INSTRUMENTAL.VIOLIN. 12-inch record. 5s. 6d. 07921 Ungarische Weisen LAszlb^ This striking violin record opens with a beautiful piece of chord playing, slow, impressive, and of fine tone. This is followed by passages in harmonics exquisitely contrasted with the former, the whole winding up with an exceedingly original and lively finale. Both the composition and the style of performance are fresh and attractive, and this last addition to many excellent violin records recently issued is full of all-round interest. (Speed Co.)
