SPRING 2013 | ISSUE thirTy-two editorial | StEPhaNIE SAYS “with ace musicians, I was walking up Grant Avenue minding my own business when out of the shadows emerged a sincere-looking young man in a suit. He was holding a can chamber music trump of creamed corn. “Want to make three dollars?” he asked brightly. Circa 1973, three dollars actually sounded pretty good. Plus, I hadn’t made my minimum cards, and incredible after four hours of playing music on the street in San Francisco, and I was hungry. Even for creamed corn. new compositions In a bland, windowless third-floor office, I swirled, stirred, smelled, poked, hidden up our sleeves, chewed, and swallowed what seemed like hundreds of bowls of creamed corn. At first, I hungrily ate the entire bowlful; by the end of the afternoon, I was it’s clear the deck is barely able to keep it down. But I persevered, putting on my best poker face. At the end of the tasting, I grimly shoved the three dollars into my flute bag stacked in our favor.“ and went on my way. “What in the world does creamed corn have to do with Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society?” you rightfully ask. A little bit of creamed corn is a tasty side dish, but you’d never want to make a meal of it. That’s our philosophy at BDDS — we’d never feed you a whole meal of creamed corn, or all Beethoven, or all Kenji Bunch, for that matter. We like variety, and so do you. You are willing to follow us into an unpredictable experience; perhaps you might not care for some of the music, but some of it will also be the sweetest you’ve ever heard. And no matter what you think of the individual pieces, you always tell us you believe in the performances. Jeffrey and I, the deuces in “Deuces Are Wild,” are going to put our cards on the table this summer and bring you the most satisfying mix of music, theater, art, and surprise. We are thrilled to present a new BDDS artist, soprano Emily Birsan, together with bass-baritone Timothy Jones and the amazing John DeMain (as pianist!), in a concert exploring the fabled love triangle of Robert and Clara Schumann and the young Johannes Brahms. We also welcome for the first time the brilliant new concertmaster of the Madison Symphony, Naha Greenholtz, and a clarinetist we’ve been trying to get for ten years, the incomparable Burt Hara from the Minnesota Orchestra. The San Francisco Trio is back, with virtuoso violinist Axel Strauss, elegant cellist Jean-Michel Fonteneau, and Jeffrey on piano. And there’s more; just turn this page to see the whole season, which only comes once a year, in June. With ace musicians, chamber music trump cards, and incredible new compositions hidden up our sleeves, it’s clear the deck is stacked in our favor. Don’t get lost in the shuffle on the way to the concert hall! Stephanie Jutt, artistic director of BDDS. C&N Photography P.S. Sorry for all the corn.
