The impact on the family is significant, of course, but the journey is easier thanks to the support of the community and the Alzheimer Society. Hubert and I have many good moments and I laugh a lot. Even with all the difficulties, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love him – he’s my husband and I want to look after him. The advocacy presentation I was able to attend has helped me build my skill in communicating the things that are important to Hubert and me as we look to the future.” -Audrey Hutlet participated in the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba’s Advocacy Skills for Caregivers program, funded by the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba’s Women’s Endowment Fund. The program trains caregivers to communicate effectively with family members, Audrey community care providers, and health care professionals. See www.alzheimer.mb.ca/ advocacy-skills-for-caregivers/. I feel so privileged that “Ithe Rady Jewish Community Centre brings in such world-class authors for Tarbut, like Rabbi Joseph Telushkin and Naomi Ragen. How remarkable it is that a community of our size can offer programs of that calibre! Great programming enriches our community’s journey because it inspires people. I am so appreciative that we have a community centre this strong. We are indeed fortunate.” -Shayla Fink is a well-known performer and teacher in the community. She’s also a passionate audience member for many Jewish arts events in the city. She’s especially thankful for the cultural arts programs offered by the Rady Jewish Community Centre. The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba has provided grants to the Rady JCC for the Tarbut Shayla Festival of Jewish Culture and other programs. 3 The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba | 2014 Annual Report ewish community life in Winnipeg is like a gulp of fresh “Jair for me. My journey started in Azerbaijan, where I worked as an industrial designer. We then moved to Israel in 1990 where I worked at a grocery store. My son moved to Winnipeg in 2004 so my wife Sofia and I came often for visits. We moved here in 2009 and became Canadian citizens last year. Every week I come to the program for seniors at Jewish Child and Family Service. The activities are very important to me. I like how our community finds a place for everyone.” -Lev Gluhenki, 72, is a grandfather of two and an active participant in community life. He is in a singing group, attends lectures, and goes swimming at the Rady JCC. The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba has provided grants to the Integration for Newcomer Seniors program he attends at Jewish Child and Family Service. JCFS offers six such sessions every week. Lev reflections on impact was born in Eritrea and lived in Sudan until taking my “Ijourney to Winnipeg in 2011 with my husband and children. At first, we stayed in our own apartment, but I often felt lonely and sad. IRCOM changed our lives. We live in IRCOM’s apartment building with other newcomers. We all come from different countries, but as immigrants, we have much in common. It’s like a family. And thanks to IRCOM and its supporters, I am now qualified to work in child care. We are so grateful to IRCOM and to the organizations that support it.” -Medhanit Gilamichael is a client of the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba (IRCOM). The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba’s Women’s Endowment Fund provided a grant to the IRCOM Child Care Program in 2012. The program Medhanit empowers newcomer women like Medhanit to gain skills and employment opportunities. The Foundation 4 has provided three other grants to IRCOM since 2008. See www.ircom.ca. I go three times a week and I’ve been going for years and years. It’s my social life and my security and it’s an absolutely vital service in our community. Most times I get there through the transportation program – and I also get rides for my grocery shopping. I’m very grateful that my journeys can be made easier.” -Sophie Shinewald, 102, is an active volunteer and a passionate member of the Gwen Secter Creative Living Centre, which has received numerous grants from the Jewish Foundation over the years.
