Home has those responsible for others, those that common devices and whether or not they are allowed in camp: empower others, and those who nurture growth. It is progression through tradition. Camp is the opportunity to help our community members develop social skills and reverse the anti-socialization and unhappiness that research has identified as prevalent with camp-aged children. The same researchers are blaming “device activity” as ultimately responsible for this social problem (see Jean Twenge, PhD in iGen: Why Today’s Super-Connected Kids Are Growing Up Less Rebellious, More Tolerant, Less Happy – and Completely Unprepared for Adulthood). Our campers, all of whom are in the iGen generation, need sufficient sleep and face-to-face social interactions to grow, to be happy, to thrive, just like the previous generations. For those of us that were campers, some of our best memories often include the late night antics and funny conversations that we had. Granted, there were not many individual screens, but we did have the precursor to the iPod (Walkman, Discman, etc.). Even back then we had FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), so most of us would stay unplugged. As such, Camp Massad is free of screens and gaming devices. Devices for music and books will be permitted for use in the campers’ individual bunks however the devices may not have any videos/movies or games stored on them. Our expectation is that you allow us to nurture our campers, your children, by complying with this rule and not sending them to camp with devices. Just like for our phone and data policy, all devices not permitted in camp will be Just as our campers' bags are checked for food that is not permitted, collected, stored, and then given back to your child as they leave camp. Such their devices will be checked and removed if they are found to have devices do not further our values of Massoret v’Ruach, Dat, Tzionut, Chaverut any applications other than those for music or reading. and Hatzlacha v’Tzmicha and will not be permitted in camp.
