2019 Cyclone Taylor Cup Event Follow-Up Report

Strathcona REGIONAL DISTRICT STAFF REPORT DATE: May 3, 2019 FILE: TO: Chair and Commissioners, Strathcona Gardens Commission FROM: Dave Leitch Chief Administrative Officer RE: 2019 CYCLONE TAYLOR CUP EVENT FOLLOW-UP REPORT PURPOSE/PROBLEM To provide the Strathcona Gardens Commission event highlights and feedback around the Cyclone Taylor Cup tournament and the sponsorship provided by the Regional District. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex was the host facility for the Cyclone Taylor Cup tournament that took place April 11-14, 2019. The tournament consisted of four teams including the Campbell River Storm as the host. The three teams involved were the Revelstoke Grizzlies (Gold), Victoria Cougars (Silver), and the North Vancouver Wolf Pack (Bronze). A total of 8 games were played which saw the Revelstoke Grizzlies defeating the Victoria Cougars 5-1 in the gold medal game. The out-of-town teams were very well greeted and welcomed as they arrived at the complex to prepare for the four-day tournament. In terms of follow-up on the Regional District's sponsorship for the event, the concession delivered 180 post-game combo meals for the teams participating in the evening games on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Originally, it was requested that staff provide 150 units (25 per team/per day), however in the end, 30 units per team slightly increased this meal allotment. The game day commentator produced voiceover ads that promoted the generous sponsorship of the Strathcona Regional District and Strathcona Gardens as the host facility, encouraging all guests to take advantage of the complex amenities and concession services. In addition, a copy of the complimentary print ad produced in the program guide is referenced in Appendix A. At the March 13, 2019 Commission meeting a motion was carried to provide financial assistance to cover $1275 concession combo meal costs plus a $2500 sponsorship in the name of the SRD, as well as shown as a gold level sponsor and that the funding come from the Strathcona Gardens service budget. It was highlighted both through social media and through direct email correspondence that the staff were exceptional in providing outstanding customer service to ensure the tournament was well received and a great success. Email correspondence Hi Koreen, I just want to email you directly to thank you and your amazing staff at Strathcona Gardens. Your staff went above and beyond in helping me and the North Vancouver Wolf Pack stay comfortable. They were always willing to work to help me with any questions I had regarding the facility, as well providing me with supplies so we could keep the rooms clean. Please thank your staff for me and it was a pleasure working with them over the week. Yours in Good Health, Grant Ammann BKin, CAT(C) Certified Athletic Therapist North Vancouver Wolf Pack The learnings from this event was that the attendance was generally the same as a typical Friday night Campbell River Storm game. Therefore, the extra staff retained to oversee satellite concession stations could realistically be foregone without impacting service levels. In addition, the teams had their own skate sharpening machines and therefore this service was of little value to the teams. However, it's important to note that equipment failure can happen, so skate sharpening back-up service should be considered - but not in terms of any significant revenue source. The ability to use the pool through complimentary passes to the participating teams was marginal. The only use happened prior to the tournament with some teams wanting to utilize the entire weight room. This tournament will help staff develop and build a solid format, template and foundation which will be used for large scale events in future. Finally, one notable facility highlight of the Cyclone Taylor Cup was the unveiling of the new Zamboni wrap sponsored by Campbell River Toyota. Driven by a facility ice surface operator wearing a tuxedo, the newly detailed Zamboni made its inaugural debut during the opening ceremonies on the Thursday evening of the tournament.
