SRes1 The Commonwealth of Massachusetts _______________ In the One Hundred and Ninety-First General Court (2019-2020) _______________ RESOLUTIONS COMMEMMORATING THE SEVENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ALLIED INVASION OF NORMANDY, FRANCE, DURING WORLD WAR II. 1 WHEREAS, ON JUNE 6, 1944, MORE THAN 160,000 ALLIED TROOPS LANDED 2 ALONG A 50-MILE STRETCH OF HEAVILY-FORTIFIED FRENCH COASTLINE IN 3 NORMANDY, FRANCE TO COMBAT THE AXIS POWERS AND THIS YEAR MARKS 4 THE SEVENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ALLIED INVASION KNOWN AS 5 “OPERATION OVERLORD”; AND 6 WHEREAS, SUPREME ALLIED COMMANDER GENERAL DWIGHT D. 7 EISENHOWER CALLED OPERATION OVERLORD “THE GREAT CRUSADE” IN WHICH 8 “WE WILL ACCEPT NOTHING LESS THAN FULL VICTORY”; AND 9 WHEREAS, THE NAVAL ASSAULT PHASE ON NORMANDY WAS CODE- 10 NAMED “OPERATION NEPTUNE” AND THE JUNE SIXTH ASSAULT DATE IS 11 REFERRED TO AS “D-DAY” TO DENOTE THE DAY ON WHICH THE INVASION WAS 12 LAUNCHED; AND 13 WHEREAS, SOLDIERS OF 6 DIVISIONS, COMPOSED OF 3 AMERICAN, 2 14 BRITISH AND 1 CANADIAN DIVISION, STORMED ASHORE IN 5 MAIN LANDING 1 of 3 15 AREAS ON THE BEACHES IN NORMANDY THAT WERE CODE-NAMED “UTAH”, 16 “OMAHA”, “GOLD”, “JUNO” AND “SWORD”; AND 17 WHEREAS, MORE THAN 20,000 SOLDIERS REPRESENTING THE AMERICAN 18 82ND AIRBORNE DIVISION, THE AMERICAN 101ST AIRBORNE DIVISION, SOLDIERS 19 IN THE GLIDER UNITS AND BRITISH PARATROOPERS PARTICIPATED IN “MISSION 20 DETROIT” AND “MISSION CHICAGO” TO LAND BEHIND ENEMY LINES AND TO 21 SECURE LANDING FIELDS IN THE 24 HOURS PRECEDING THE AMPHIBIOUS 22 LANDING; AND 23 WHEREAS, THE D-DAY LANDING WAS THE LARGEST SINGLE AMPHIBIOUS 24 ASSAULT IN HISTORY AND CONSISTED OF APPROXIMATELY 31,000 MEMBERS OF 25 THE UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES AND MORE THAN 3,000 VEHICLES THAT 26 EMBARKED ON 208 VESSELS FROM WEYMOUTH AND PORTSMOUTH, ENGLAND; 27 AND 28 WHEREAS, OF THE ESTIMATED 9,400 CASUALTIES INCURRED BY ALLIED 29 FORCES ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE LANDING, AN ESTIMATED 5,400 CASUALTIES 30 WERE MEMBERS OF THE UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES; AND 31 WHEREAS, OF THE NUMEROUS SERVICE MEMBERS BURIED IN THE 32 NORMANDY AMERICAN CEMETERY AND MEMORIAL IN NORMANDY, FRANCE, 33 411 OF THEM ENLISTED IN THE COMMONWEALTH; AND 34 WHEREAS, ONLY 5 DAYS AFTER THE INITIAL LANDING, ALLIED FORCES 35 SECURED A BEACHHEAD THAT WAS 50 MILES LONG AND 12 MILES DEEP AND 36 WAS OCCUPIED BY MORE THAN 325,000 SOLDIERS; AND 2 of 3 37 WHEREAS, PLANNED FOR OVER 2 YEARS BY ALLIED FORCES, THE D-DAY 38 INVASION WAS AN INTRICATE COORDINATION OF THE WORLD’S GREATEST 39 MILITARY FORCES AND AN EXERCISE IN COOPERATION THAT MARKED THE 40 TURNING POINT OF WORLD WAR II AND OF THE WORLD’S HISTORY; AND 41 WHEREAS, IN 2018, THERE WERE APPROXIMATELY 496,700 SURVIVING 42 VETERANS OF WORLD WAR II, WITH 12,958 IN THE COMMONWEALTH PASSING 43 AWAY AT A RATE OF APPROXIMATELY 350 EACH DAY ; AND 44 WHEREAS, MEMBERS OF “THE GREATEST GENERATION” ASSUMED THE 45 TASK OF COOPERATING TO FREE THE WORLD FROM NAZI AND FASCIST REGIMES 46 AND RESTORE LIBERTY TO EUROPE; NOW THEREFORE BE IT 47 RESOLVED, THE MASSACHUSETTS SENATE HEREBY COMMEMMORATES 48 THE SEVENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ALLIED INVASION OF NORMANDY, 49 FRANCE DURING WORLD WAR II, ALSO KNOWN AS D-DAY, AND FURTHER 50 EXPRESSES ITS GRATITUDE AND APPRECIATION TO THE MEMBERS OF THE 51 UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES AND THE ALLIED FORCES FOR THEIR 52 COOPERATION AND SACRIFICE IN THIS CRITICAL BATTLE TO SECURE 53 LIBERATION FROM NAZI AND FASCIST REGIMES; AND BE IT FURTHER 54 RESOLVED, THAT COPIES OF THESE RESOLUTIONS BE TRANSMITTED 55 FORTHWITH BY THE CLERK OF THE SENATE TO THE DISABLED AMERICAN 56 VETERANS DEPARTMENT OF MASSACHUSETTS, VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS, 57 NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN VETERANS AND THE AMERICAN 58 LEGION. 3 of 3.
