You’re missing out. “So after several near misses, I finally caught The Polyphonic Spree on Friday night, and they pretty much rocked my socks off. Tim DeLaughter and the other 21 Spreers took the stage to much anticipation and sure didn’t let me down. The (non-Cult) group reminded me of the I’m From Barcelona show at McCarren Pool this summer, partially on account of their large ensemble and the massive amount of stuff happening on stage, but also just in the joy they took at performing and entertaining. Their music also holds a few similarities. After cutting a heart in a banner that separated us from the Spree, DeLaughter spent most of his time standing on an elevated podium of sorts and kept us all intrigued throughout. The use of massive amounts of confetti was sweet, as was DeLaughter’s time amongst the audience in which I had to help him back up onto stage. DeLaughter also seemed to remember specific fans from previous shows - he pointed out a few separate people that were at their recent show in Pittsburgh. I’ll be honest in that I don’t listen to a ton of The Polyphonic Spree, but I think now that I’ve seen them, I’ll probably listen to a bit more - they were absolutely incredible. I loved seeing them do “Soldier Girl,” “Running Away” and “Get Up and Go” in concert - the latter being especially fantastic - and just witnessing the whole shenanigan. I would definitely see them again given the chance, and if you haven’t already checked out their 2007 record, The Fragile Army, do so - I’m listening again, and it could potentially crack my top 20 of the year.” - Cafe Eclectica Blog “Polyphonic Spree leader Tim DeLaughter cut a heart out of a swatch of red fabric that hung across the length of the stage to start Friday night’s show at Terminal 5. Then he cut down the whole thing to reveal the rest of the band (23 members by our count, but we might’ve missed somebody behind the harp, the horn section, or one of the two drum kits) and waved the heart around like a peaceful matador. The theatrics continued throughout the set, aided by a sextet of synchronized, hair-swinging backup singers and the confetti cannons that lent the night a New Year’s Rockin’ Eve vibe. After an hour, the Spree walked off the stage one by one, returning moments later having changed out of their military-style uniforms and into the culty robes they’re better known for. They picked up their instruments and blasted into Nirvana’s “Lithium,” which may not be the most obvious cover song for a band that’s the personification of a smiley emoticon, but by then we were putty in their hands. DeLaughter stood before the crowd with arms outstretched looking like a cross between a statue of Christ the Redeemer and the Big Bad Wolf in Grandma’s nightgown and thanked us for being there to spread the positivity. That sounds hokey now, but on Friday night there was no name calling or fighting over cabs as the crowd filed out onto a cold, remote stretch of Eleventh Avenue.” - New York Magazine Mike Doughty won’t stop until every question is answered “Scrap, mix ‘em up real good,” Mike Doughty said to Andrew “Scrap” Livingston at Vancouver’s Red Room venue Saturday night (Dec. 1), as the cellist/guitarist readied a host of crowd queries as a part of Doughty’s Question Jar tour. The former Soul Coughing frontman answered all questions in between songs — except, that is, when there were no queries. “This is not a declarative statement jar,” he chided good-naturedly after a few duds, and before launching into Soul Coughing’s “Circles.” Confident and direct, and sporting a dark blazer over a black t-shirt, Doughty offered up a mix of older material and new songs from upcoming solo LP Golden Delicious as the crowd, ranging from young dudes in hoodies to older, artsy couples, laughed and stood close, shouting callbacks and question clarifications. “Busting Up a Starbucks,” from 2005’s Haughty Melodic and Ruby Vroom’s “Janine” were fan faves; fresh tunes like “Navigating by the Stars at Night” softened Doughty’s delivery, while maintaining the lyrical tenacity for which he’s best known. Make no mistake, however, this was no campfire session — even though Doughty took time out to answer even the non sequitur variety (“Do chicks still dig robots?” Doughty: “I think it’s pirates now”). Doughty, a former addict, handled a question about Vancouver’s government- sponsored safe heroin injection sites with a hard-eye: “Clean needles, yes; methadone, no.” After courting the last holdouts with “Looking at the World from the Bottom of a Well,” reciting an E.E. Cummings poem, covering Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler,” and telling us how to heal a broken heart (“If you’re a man, shave every day.
