My impression of Steely Dan was a negative one, prior to hearing this album. When Steely Dan first broke into this popular music business, they catered to the needs of the AM ra­ His ey isV cnce is ev e r ^ w W r e dio audience, a la "Get Back Jack." Steely Dan has finally come of age and refined their music so they may be categorized as Progressive musicians. Their music on Aja i n the wind, sun,trees, seems to flow from one central school of music thought into many di­ verse prospectives; jazz, folk and disguised disco a ll come into play to form an abstract artistic unity. and flowers Aja is a versatile album that would be suitable for any party or background mood music for the quieter moments. The cuts on Aja range from soft blues to explosive instrumentals with violent harmonicalT h e m a n w \\o re f u s e s undertones. The title cut Aja has a well-played three minute instru­ mental complete with electric piano, tenor sax, bass, and highlighted by the suave sounds of the synthesizer. t o s e e t h e s e My favorite cut, Deacon Blues, besides being an excellent crea­ tive rocker, has a unique set of lyrics that could possibly have a different meaning for every listener.
