Americans John Isner and Jack Sock highlight the schedule on Louis Armstrong Stadium, while Canadians Vasek Pospisil and Milos Raonic play consecutive matches on Grandstand. Raonic reached his maiden Grand Slam final at Wimbledon, beginning a summer of firsts for some of the brightest stars on tour. No. 10 seed Gael Monfils, who plays on Court 17, captured his first ATP World Tour 500 title at Washington. No. 7 seed Marin Cilic, who plays on Court 5, secured his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title at Cincinnati. Djokovic rarely faces a player who owns a winning record against him. He will Wednesday when he takes on Jiri Vesely. In their only meeting, the 23-year-old Czech defeated the defending champion Djokovic in the second round at ATP Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo in April. Vesely is one of two Top 100 players with more wins than losses against Djokovic (No. 23 Ivo Karlovic is 2-1). On the other hand, Djokovic has dominated the next three highest-ranked players in his half of the draw: Nadal (26-23 with 7 straight wins and 15 straight sets), Raonic (7-0) and Cilic (14-0). Nadal follows Djokovic against Andreas Seppi in the night session’s featured men’s match on Arthur Ashe Stadium. The No. 4 seed is 7-1 lifetime versus Seppi, including a straight-set win during the Rio Olympics second round on August 9. Nadal has won one hard-court title since capturing the 2013 US Open championship, and that came nearly 32 months ago at Doha. Seppi is 8-77 lifetime against Top 10 opponents with eight straight losses. Louis Armstrong Stadium will host Americans Isner and Sock against qualifiers Steve Darcis and Mischa Zverev respectively. Isner earned the second comeback of his career from two sets down on Monday, and Darcis did the same. The 20th-seeded Isner edged 18-year-old countryman Frances Tiafoe, while Darcis rallied to defeat unseeded Aussie Jordan Thompson. Sock, too, required five sets to advance past American teenager Taylor Fritz, making Zverev’s four-set win over Pierre-Hugues Herbert seem routine. Mischa and Alexander Zverev are the first brothers to both reach the second round at the US Open since Byron and Wayne Black in 1998. A trio of Top 10 seeds will play second-round matches on outer courts. Cilic, who won the 2014 US Open title, takes to Court 5 against Sergiy Stakhovsky. The Croat has won 13 of his last 14 and 17 of his last 19 matches at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. French shot-makers Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Monfils will play back- to-back on Court 17. The ninth-seeded Tsonga takes on Australian wild card James Duckworth for the first time, then the 10th-seeded Monfils meets Czech qualifier Jan Satral, who earned his first tour-level win on Monday. 2016 US OPEN – Day 3 Media Notes Wednesday, August 31, 2016 Page 2 of 21 [1] Novak Djokovic (SRB) vs Jiri Vesely (CZE) Vesely Leads 1-0 A 16 ATP Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo Clay R32 Jiri Vesely 6-4 2-6 6-4 Djokovic is 43-2 in Grand Slam 2R, falling at Roland Garros in 2005 (ret. vs. Coria) and 2008 Wimbledon (l. to Safin).
