Stainton and Thornton Village Newsletter DDeeeecembercember 2012018888 Wishing you all a Joyous Christmas and a Healthy and Peaceful New Year Remembrance by Elizabeth Revett The Memorial Hall was built as a National School in 1844 and was run by the Parish Church. In 1878 the new Free Board School was built opposite and the Hall remained as a reading room, until it was sold to the Parish Council. Funds raised by public subscription enabled it be transformed into the current Memorial Hall. On 20th December 1920 , Mrs Fawcett, on behalf of the subscribers, formally opened Stainton Memorial Hall. During the ceremony, Lieutenant Colonel Maurice M L Bell unveiled the Dedicatory Tablet which records the names of the fallen and the Roll of Honour Tablet which records the names of those who had also served in the First World War. In this Centenary Year marking the end of World War One, the annual Remembrance service was held in the Hall on Saturday 10th November, led by Vicar Vivienne Hatton. Major John Cooper, in service dress and medals, read out the eleven names which appear on the Dedicatory Tablet before laying the wreath to honour the fallen followed by a two minutes silence at 11am. Over previous weeks a request went out for people to knit or crochet poppies for a display in church and several hundred were provided to make a splendid carpet of poppies tumbling down the chancel steps, hung against the chancel pillars and a wreath on the central south window sill. Poppies also festooned the main gate to the churchyard, emphasising the Commonwealth War Grave of a local RAF lad A.J. Naisbit, shot down in 1944. This can be found on the bottom terrace of the church yard. The church was open to all on Saturday morning and after the service on Sunday. A big thank you to all those involved in the magnificent display in St. Peter and St. Paul's Church. The Remembrance Service on Sunday in church led by Vicar Vivienne Hatton, was very moving with hymns sung, readings by an older person and a child and wreaths laid by R.A.F. veteran Norman Frankish and Police Officer Kerrin Smith, a one-time Stainton resident, in her uniform and medals. Ward Councillor’s Report by Cllr David Coupe There have been a number of thefts and criminal damage to vehicles over the past few months. This includes the removal of Lead from the Church Roof and other premises. If you see anything suspicious going on in the villages and surrounding area you should call Cleveland Police on the 101 number. As always if the incident is serious and an immediate threat then you should ring 999. There has yet again been rubbish dumped in various parts of the villages. This included a lorry load of rubbish dumped in the Spinney at Stainton. If you see anything suspicious please report it to the police especially if you can get a vehicle registration number. We are all responsible for the correct disposal of our refuse. The Council operate a very good collection service for rubbish large or small. On Middlesbrough Council’s Website the is section called My Middlesbrough where you can sign up and report problems such as dumped rubbish and other Council related issues. The Speeding problems in Stainton & Thornton as well as on the surrounding roads is getting worse. Middlesbrough Council carried out a speed survey over the last few months. The results in Thornton showed that very few people stuck to the 20 MPH speed limit. There were quite a few recorded as travelling over 40 MPH and 2 were recorded at over 60MPH! This is totally unacceptable and so it is the intension of Middlesbrough Council to fit flashing warning signs as well as traffic calming measurers. The Police Speed Watch will be in operation hopefully over the next few months. The 13/13a bus service continues to be well used and I again thank everyone who uses it which now goes to Coulby Newham. It will continue to evolve over the next few years with hopefully improvements to the service. The free bus service on Monday and Friday mornings to Coulby Newham Shopping Centre is continuing. This service comes to Stainton via Maltby and Thornton and is very well used. With the building of new houses in the area there is a marked increase in traffic. I am looking into the problems with crossings along Stainton Way along with Middlesbrough Council. This is not only causing problems near Stainton but right up to the Gables Pub. The Neighbourhood Plan for Stainton & Thornton is well on its way. We hold regular meetings which we encourage residents to participate in. I would like to thank the dedicated team whose hard work has got us to where we are. This will work alongside the Middlesbrough Council Local Plan which is available to view on line. There are now quite a few new residents at Montpellier Manor Care both on long term and for respite care. Some of the residents attend the Saturday Coffee morning and are most welcome as are residents from all the new developments in the area. My Facebook page which is Stainton & Thornton Community, which I try to keep it up to date with matters that affect our communities. I hope as many of you can view it and it is also available for comments concerning the area. I try to attend the Saturday Coffee Morning in the Memorial Hall Stainton if anyone wishes to bring any problems or concerns, or you can e-mail or telephone me. The Thursday Morning Group (alias the Last of the Summer Wine Gang) consisting of ten volunteers (three of whom have First Aid qualifications) have continued to care for the maintenance of our Green Spaces and of seats, notice boards, wooden sculptures, Thornton signpost at the T junction and the village pump. A new planter sited at Maltby Road beside the Memorial seat has been filled with perennial plants, violas under planted with bulbs for extended interest. A day in October in Maelor’s Wood was organised by Jenny Hagan of TVWT and Ageing Middlesbrough to offer people over 50 the chance to see what our volunteers do. There were fun activities making bird boxes, and bird feeders and learning about coppicing and tidying up the wood.
