MARY’S UNIVERSITY fter a time of critical uncertainty, as the world grapples with the lingering effects of a global pandemic, we are all searching for ways to focus on what is truly important Aand life-giving. Through all the grief, isolation, and hardship engendered by the pandemic, we have been offered the gift of sifting what we want to honour in our lives from what is dispensable. I believe in the transformative power of education, especially the kind of learning that we offer at St. Mary’s University. I am even more convinced of its crucial and far-reaching impact as we seek to recover, rebuild and renew our society in the wake of the political, economic, and social disruption of the last two years. At St. Mary’s University we will invite and challenge you to question ideas, social systems, and knowledge. What has led to the Black Lives Matter Movement? What does Indigenous sovereignty mean? What does a social justice lens contribute when we examine the unequal impact that COVID-19 has had on people of various socioeconomic strata, people of colour, and single parents? How can we achieve wholeness and wellness individually and as a society? These questions matter because you will be one of our future leaders, someone shaping the world in which we live. We believe that education is far too precious to be squandered on cramming facts into students’ heads. Rather, we seek learners who are curious, want to make an impact, not content with the status quo. We want to engage in dialogue with you, inspire you to develop your creative and critical capacities, stretch you, and prompt you to examine your own life. Instead of mere facts, you will learn how to learn – and how it matters. As Faculty and staff at St. Mary’s, we are committed to learning alongside you and being part of generative change to make the world a better place for all. The lessons we have gained through the pandemic about resilience, hope, and struggle are precious soil for our future growth. We are honoured to be part of your learning journey. Let us embrace the future with courage and diligence – education is the path to a better world.
