The Senate sat for the Impeachment hearing of former President Donald Trump, while the House Homeland Security Committee held a hearing on cyber threats. The Senate Judiciary Committee also met to officially organize itself, and announced the schedule for the hearings and vote on the nomination of Merrick Garland to be Attorney General. The Biden Administration announced that the release of its FY 2022 budget will be delayed. It is unclear when it will be released. Fiscal Year 2021 Department of Justice Grant Solicitations - The Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs recently began to release fiscal year 2021 grant solicitations. Deadlines for many of these grants are in February and early March. You can find a list of the solicitations here. JustGrants Application Submission Webinars - DOJ’s JustGrants team is offering webinar sessions on the FY 2021 application submission process. The webinars will provide targeted assistance to potential applicants applying for DOJ funding opportunities. There are 10 webinars set to take place between February 11 and March 22. USSC Report on Fentanyl and Fentanyl Analogues - The U.S. Sentencing Commission recently released a report titled, Fentanyl and Fentanyl Analogues: Federal Trends and Trafficking Patterns. This report examines the relatively new and emerging problem of fentanyl and fentanyl analogue trafficking. It summarizes the commission’s related policy work and discusses the continuing policymaking efforts of Congress and the U.S. Department of Justice in this area. Finally, the publication presents data about fentanyl and fentanyl analogue offenses since 2005 and provides an in-depth analysis of the Fiscal Year 2019 fentanyl and fentanyl analogue offenses and offenders. You can read the report here. BJS Releases New Prisoner Data - The Bureau of Justice Statistics recently released the 2019 data for Corrections Statistical Analysis Tool (CSAT) – Prisoners. Prisoner data for the years 1978 through 2019 is available through CSAT. Users can examine prisoner data for federal or state correctional authorities. Data include counts of prison admissions and releases, as well as year-end populations by state or federal jurisdiction, persons imprisoned in private facilities and local jails, imprisonment rate, citizenship status, prison capacity, and sex. Law Enforcement Congressional Badge of Bravery - Nominate deserving law enforcement officers who have demonstrated outstanding acts of bravery in the line of duty. Nominations for the 2020 Congressional Badge of Bravery are due Monday, 2/15. Nominees for the Congressional Badge of Bravery must have either: 1) Sustained a physical injury while engaged in the lawful duties of the individual, and performing an act characterized as bravery by the agency head who makes the nomination, and being at personal risk; or 2) Although not injured, performed an act characterized as bravery by the agency head who makes the nomination that placed the individual at risk of serious physical injury or death. NOMINATIONS DUE NEXT WEEK! - Kurt Schmid Criminal Intelligence Meritorious Service Award Nominations - The Kurt Schmid Criminal Intelligence Meritorious Service Award was established to recognize law enforcement representatives and partners who have been champions for event and case deconfliction, officer safety, or other criminal intelligence meritorious service. Nominations for the award will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. (ET) Friday, February 19, 2021.
