Preferred Citation: Old Judge Cabinet Card Collection, National Baseball Hall of Fame Library, Cooperstown, NY Acquisitions Information: Core of the collection (BL-141.46) was donated by David Leroy Reeves (b. 1872) in 1946. Reeves was a sports writer and editor for the Public Ledger in Philadelphia; secretary and treasurer of the Philadelphia National League of Baseball Club in 1902; secretary to the president of the National League in NYC from 1912-1916; graduate manager of athletics at Lafayette College from 1921-1946; and charter member of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. A group of 22 cards (BL-5.48) were donated in 1948 by Charles J. “Chilly” Doyle (1884- 1959), a sports writer for the Pittsburgh Gazette-Times, 1914-1927 and the Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph, 1927-1958. Served as president of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Processing Information: Described by Jenny Ambrose, Assistant Photo Archivist, October 2009. Scope and Content: Collection of advertising cabinet cards issued as mail order premiums by Goodwin & Company, a New York tobacco firm, to promote their “Old Judge” brand cigarettes. Contains 305 cards depicting 263 different baseball players and managers. The photographs are albumen prints on standard cabinet card mounts measuring 6.5 x 4.25 inches. Primarily consists of full-length, posed-action, studio portraits of baseball players in uniform who played for major and minor league teams in the National League, American Association, and Western Association between 1887 and 1889. Also includes some portraits of managers who are typically dressed in street clothes. Most of the Old Judge cabinet card photographs are a subset of a larger series of photographic images issued as small format, cigarette cards by Goodwin & Co. between 1886 and 1890 (N172) depicting over 500 players in multiple poses for a total of almost 2,500 known images. Thirty-five photographs are known to exist only in the cabinet card format. Organization of the Collection: Arranged alphabetically by the last name of the player. The title and copyright statement, as inscribed in the negative, are given below. All of the cards contain the imprint on the bottom of the mount: “OLD JUDGE CIGARETTES.
