Week 1: Space Fact Sheet The Sun The sun is a star. Stars are burning balls of gases-mostly hydrogen and helium. We will paint the Sun using orange, yellow, and red. Mercury Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, but it is not the hottest. It is a rocky planet. It has no moons. We will paint Mercury light gray. Venus Venus is the hottest planet (even though Mercury is closer to the Sun). Venus has a thick atmosphere (a layer of gases around the planet) that traps the heat in. It is a rocky planet. It has no moons. We will pain it tan or light orange. Earth Earth is small and rocky. Water covers about 70% of Earth. Earth has one moon. From space, Earth looks blue, green, brown and white. The white is the clouds! We will paint it mostly blue, with some green and brown for the land. Use a paper towel or a sponge to dab some white on top for the clouds. Mars Mars is called the Red Planet because there is iron in the soil that can rust. It is small and cold. Mars has 2 moons named Phobos and Deimos. We will paint it red. Week 1: Space Fact Sheet Jupiter Jupiter is the biggest planet in our solar system. It is a gas giant. It is made up of gases like hydrogen and helium. It has 79 moons! Jupiter has storms on its surface-including one called the Great Red Spot that has been going on for hundreds of years! We will paint Jupiter with swirls of white, gray, and reddish brown. Don’t forget to paint the Great Red Spot. Saturn Saturn is also a gas giant like Jupiter. It is known for its beautiful rings of ice and rock. Saturn has 53 moons. We will paint Saturn using light gray and brown. You can add a ring around Saturn using a wire coat hanger (Make sure you ask permission first!) Uranus Uranus is an ice giant. It has a set of 13 rings, but they are harder to see than Saturn’s. We will paint Uranus blue. Neptune Neptune is a lot like Uranus. It is about the same size and is made of ice and gas just like Uranus. It has 6 rings, but they are hard to see. We will paint Neptune blue also. Semana 1: El Espacio El Sol El Sol es una estrella. Usa un servilleta o esponja para aplicar blanco para las nubes. Marte Marte se llama el Planeta Rojo porque hay hierro en el suelo que puede oxidarse.
