KEY COLOR HARMONY When creating a perfect color palette, you want all the colors to work together and create harmony. You can achieve this by using a "key" color, or a color that is used in small amounts and added to each color mixture. For example, the "Summer Citrus" palette's key color in the oranges is peach, and a little is used in all 3 orange shades. I also do this often with the color Taupe - to give my colors a nice muted look. MIXING DIFFERENT SHADES/TONES ADD MORE WHITE ICING TO CHANGE THE TINT OF YOUR TINT PURE COLOR. PURE COLOR ADD TAUPE TO CHANGE THE TON TONE OF YOUR COLOR/MUTE YOUR COLOR. YOU CAN ALSO USE IVORY. ADD BLACK TO CHANGE THE SHADE SHADE OF YOUR PURE COLOR & DARKEN. BE CAREFUL WITH THIS! 5 HOW TO MEASURE YOUR GEL FOOD COLORING • Q U I C K G U I D E T O G E L F O O D C O L O R M E A S U R E M E N T S • You'll notice through-out this color mixing guide in each formula when listing how much color to use I will say "drop, small drop, dab, or tiny dab" Below is a photo guide for what each means word means. Color drops are added on the tip of a butter knife to better show size for reference. DROP SMALL DROP DAB SMALL DAB A drop is when you About 1/2 of the For a dab, squeeze About 1/2 the amount squeeze the bottle amount of a regular some gel color out of of a dab. Take your large blob comes out. spatula and dab a small amount onto your spatula. 6 TIPS & TRICKS • M A K I N G C O L O R M I X I N G E A S I E R • IMPORTANT REMINDER I add about 1 teaspoon of white gel icing to my base icing (per 2 lb of powdered sugar). If you do not do this, your colors may vary more. Color Mixing Tips & Tricks Start with a small amount of color. You can always add more, but it's hard to go from dark to light. Use a thin rubber spatula to mix your icing. Trust me, this is a LOT easier than a spoon! You can use the same bowl for mixing multiple colors, just go from light to dark. Plus, this saves on dishes! If you want to "mute" your color, add a tiny bit of Taupe. When adding icing to your tipless bags, place your bag in a small cup and fold the edges of the bag around the lip of the cup. This will make it so you can easily pour in your icing. TO MAKE A GRADIENT OF COLOR: FOR EXAMPLE: 1. Mix 3.5 ounces of any color, we'll say Hibiscus. 2. Keep 2 ounces in one bowl, this will be your darkest color. 3. In remaining 3 bowls, add one ounce, 1/2 ounce. 4. Next in remaining 3 bowls, add back white so you have 2 ounces in each bowl. Now you should have an even gradient of your Hibiscus color! 7 TROPICAL PARADISE • P E R 1 O Z O F I C I N G • C o l o r s N e e d e d : P e a c h , T e r r a c o t t a , D u s t y R o s e , I v o r y , F o r e s t G r e e n , T u r q u o i s e , A v o c a d o ORANGE CORAL CORAL SHELL CORAL PINK CORAL Peach: 2 drops Terracotta: 1 drop Terracotta: 1 small drop Terracotta: 1 dab Terracotta: 1 drop Peach: 1 small dab Ivory: 1 drop Dusty Rose: 1 drop ARUBA BLUE JADE LAGOON SEASCAPE Forest Green: 1 drop Turquoise: 1 drop Turquoise: 1 dab Turquoise: 1 small dab Turquoise: 1 drop Avocado: 1 small drop Avocado: 1 small drop Avocado: 1 small dab 8 SUMMER CITRUS • P E R 1 O Z O F I C I N G • C o l o r s N e e d e d : I v o r y , P e a c h , G o l d , D u s t y R o s e , F o r e s t G r e e n , S i l v e r S p r u c e CELEMENTINE PEACH APRICOT ALMOND Peach: 1 drop Peach: 1 small drop Peach: 1 small dab Peach: 1 small dab Gold: 1 drop Gold: 1 small drop Dusty Rose: 1 small dab Ivory: 1 small dab Ivory: 1 dab Ivory: 1 small dab ALPINE JUNGLE Forest Green: 1 drop Forest Green: 1 small drop Silver Spruce: 1 drop 9 SUMMER CACTI • P E R 1 O Z O F I C I N G • C o l o r s N e e d e d : F o r e s t G r e e n , M o s s , W a r m B r o w n , D u s t y R o s e PRICKLY PEAR GREEN AGAVE GREEN CACTUS STICK GREEN DESERT BROWN Forest Green: 2 drops Forest Green: 1 drop Moss: 1 drop Warm Brown: 1 drop Moss: 1 drop CACTUS FLOWER Dusty Rose: 1 dab 10 ALOE VERA • P E R 1 O Z O F I C I N G • C o l o r s N e e d e d : S t o n e , T a u p e , I v o r y , D u s t y R o s e , T e r r a c o t t a , G o l d , F o r e s t G r e e n , M o s s , T e a l CEMENT STONE PEACH DUST PEACH BLOSSOM Stone: 1 drop Stone: 1 dab Dusty Rose: 1 small dab Dusty Rose: 1 drop Taupe: 1 small drop Ivory: 1 small dab Terracotta: 1 dab SUNSET ALOE VERA Gold: 1 drop Forest Green: 2 drops Ivory: 1 drop Moss: 2 drops Teal: 1 small drop 11 UNICORNS & RAINBOWS • P E R 1 O Z O F I C I N G • C o l o r s N e e d e d : T a u p e , E l e c t r i c G r e e n , A v o c a d o ,.
