NW Group Statement LDP June 2014 FINAL

North West Cardiff Group Responding to the concerns of our communities Creigiau Danescourt Gwaelod y Garth Llandaff Pentyrch Radyr & Morganstown St Fagans CARDIFF LDP WILL SCUPPER METRO PLANS Communities in Cardiff have come together to express their anguish at plans by Cardiff Council to press ahead with a Local Development Plan which does not allow for the future provision of a Metro Network inter-linking South Wales. This week Cardiff Council will vote on their final LDP proposals to go before the Assembly’s Examiner. The LDP includes allowance to build up to 11,650 new homes in North West Cardiff alone. This area is also prioritised by the Cardiff Capital City Region Board for a new transport link from Cardiff to Llantrisant. Cllr Graham Thomas, elected in Creigiau and St Fagans ward, but also speaking on behalf of communities in Radyr, Llandaff, Morganstown, Pentyrch, Gwaelod-Y-Garth, Capel Llanilltern Rhydylafer and Danescourt, said : “This is Cardiff Council’s golden opportunity to plan for a modern and exciting city. We accept the general shortage of homes in the city, we accept the pressing need for an LDP, and we are excited by the prospect of a modern transport system in the area, much of which is very heavily car-dependent. However, unless Cardiff Council phases and integrates the building of these houses with implementation of the Metro, its vision for ensuring sustainable mobility across the City Region could be lost for future generations. We are also dismayed at the thought of so many houses being built in outlying green field areas of the city, which can only lead to grid-locked roads and more congestion on already busy junctions at Llandaff Bridge, Ynys Bridge, Llantrisant Road and St Fagans Road. By phasing brownfield sites for earlier development, we believe many of the green fields could be saved. Without this they are more likely to be cherry picked for development before any credible transport provision is in place.” .
